Monique met Deb from Boots Photography at a friend’s wedding, and so of course booked her for her own. If you met Deb, you would do the same, trust us on that. So pre-wedding, Monique and her husband-to-be, Tom, got together with the lovely Deb for an engagement shoot, which is beautiful beyond words. Just take a look… they are so, what’s the word? Wow.

Sunshine Coast wedding photographer, Alan Hughes, convinced newlywed couple, Elisha and Stephen, to take a leap of faith and go below for their post-honeymoon photo shoot. I bet they are not sorry he did, these photos are nothing short of incredibe! 

We love the way Elisha’s dress flows in the water, and they have somehow managed to create an incredibly romantic set of images. I’m sure not all of us could pull off such a feat so gracefully, but these two, with the guidance of champion photographer, Alan, have achieved stunning results. 

The beautiful lighting and intimacy are what make these photos, and give it that sense of voyeurism. Alan has managed to take stunning photos from all different angles, and create a collection of incredibly unique photos. We must remember – Alan was in the water, too! We simply don’t know how he does it! Wonder if he wore goggles…

I am reposting this engagement shoot today. 1. Because it’s awesome. 2. Because I’m sure as it was originally posted over a year ago, many of you would not have seen it before and I don’t want you to miss out!

Guess what? You don’t actually have to wear matching white singlets and denim to your engagement photo shoot. And, although there are stunningly gorgeous beaches here on the Sunshine Coast, you don’t actually have to have your engagement session at one of them. And you’ll never believe this – every last pic doesn’t actually have to be all lovey-dovey!

Not that there is anything at all wrong with any of the above. The classic denim and white on the beach, all loved-up might be just what you would love to see in a frame on your coffee table or as a nice big canvas on your wall for years to come. You will certainly be spoiled for choice with all of the gorgeous natural Sunshine Coast settings to use in your engagement photo session. 

However, we know there are some of you out there who are a little left of centre, and crave a unique, unusual idea for your engagement photo session. Man, have I got one for you. How about a multi-level carpark in Maroochydore? Sound uninspiring? Think again. You obviously have not met Julian Beattie. Jules loves to work with quirky couples with a bit of a creative spark to create fun Sunshine Coast engagement photo sessions with a bit of a difference and a lot of personality. 

Simon and Simone are clearly a couple with personality. They brought along a couple of props to their shoot – an old camera and an old Korg keyboard. They didn’t match their outfits, they didn’t limit themselves, and… take a look – they didn’t even kiss. This is nothing short of outrageous!

See what a simple idea, three open minds and a whole stack of fun can produce!

This pair were more than happy trekking through long grass, sometimes way above their heads! Darren is in Land Management and Kylie is a Nutritionist, so they are at one with nature – not so much for our Alan, who was quite pleased the country folk were there to forge the way ahead, being not too fond of snake encounters! Although he admits that he quite regularly finds himself in these situations, and he hasn’t spotted one in three years. 

Alan says of shooting Kylie and Darren…

“Their connection was awesome, I’m lucky in my job to meet so many couples that have this synergy that is almost tangible, and these two had it in spades. Despite being nervous about being photographed for their wedding day, which is what these shoots are all about, they were beautiful to spend time with and photograph.“

Kylie and Darren have since had their beautiful wedding in April. It was a backyard wedding, and with rain and all, it was perfect. You can take a peek at it on Alan Hughes’ blog.

“I’d say that romance is a lot like this image in certain ways. I consider romance to be the support that holds up a relationship (Of course, there are lots of other factors, too) …. but it is the perfect ying and yang mixed with the perfect balance from both people on the swing that is love. And I think the balance is held together a lot better when you constantly, consistently and honestly reassure the other person just how much you cherish that balance and therefore your love. And in a lot of ways, romance does that both directly and inadvertently — It shows that you’re willing to put in the thought, the effort and time over the years to really make the other person feel special.

“The greatest part about this balance, this love, is that it doesn’t just have to be shown on the big Hallmark days … but Valentines Day is an awesome excuse to do that. And let’s face it, it’s freaking cute. Long story short, I think romance is so important in a relationship and truly keeps the fun alive — it keeps the excitement going and keeps that swing nice and strong, able to hold both of you out of the water …. See what I did there? Ahhh, ahhh!“

Our gorgeous girl will be wedding her beloved, Dave in a Maleny wedding ceremony at a private estate. We simply cannot wait to see all of her undoubtedly gorgeous wedding photos, but in the meantime we will simply have to placate ourselves with the couple’s lovely engagement shoot by Photography by Lizz Pennings.

The shoot took place at Moffat Beach, a special place to Kirsten and Dave, who have shared many a picnic up on the hill. One such picnic actually resulted in their engagement! 

Web-based business owner, David, and school chaplin, Kirsten, first met at church, but he thought she was a bit too much of a hippy, and she didn’t like his arrogance! It wasn’t until they worked on a community project together, helping on a backyard blitz that they discovered they actually quite liked one another.

Kirsten says it is Dave’s integrity, honour, the way he faces life’s curve balls and puts God first that made her fall in love with him and agree to marry him. Well, that and his awesome beard!

The Romantic Proposal

“Dave took the day off work and took me on a mini shopping spree, then we had mad mexican (our fave!) for lunch, followed by a movie. After that he casually suggested we go for a walk at Moffat Beach and once we got there, we walked around the beach part for a while, sat & voice-overed the dogs we were watching run around.

“Shortly after Dave, checked his watch and said we were going. He lead me up Moffat Beach cliff to Tom Swinton playing guitar and serenading us live! There was also a picnic set up with candles, all my favourite foods (sushi, hommus & veggies, dark chocolate, a cup of tea, licorice, etc. We watched the sunset whilst chatting, eating and listening to the awesome music Tom was playing for about an hour or so, then Dave said we were going to keep walking and made us wear the miners hat head torches!

We then preceded to walk into the forrest around the corner and Dave took me to a tree where he had carved our initials in a love heart ages ago. I recognized it as when I’d gone to New Zealand earlier in the year, I’d written a letter to Dave for everyday I was away. Each day had a dare he had to complete and get photographic proof. One day was write something somewhere public – to which he had engraved the heart and later shown me the photo. But after he’d taken the photo, he had also engraved “Will you marry me?” planning that he’d take me there one day.

Once I saw that part in person, I looked at Dave and he was on one knee holding out my engagement ring and he asked me to marry him. I was speechless and just kissed him and he had to ask me to answer him to which I replied “of course.””
