At Shelly Beach in Caloundra, Rachel and Jacob were captured in all their engagement bliss by the one and only Emma Nayler Photographer. I had a chat with Rachel all about her engagement shoot and 2020 wedding plans. 

Rachel, where did you have your engagement shoot and why did you choose this location? 

We chose to have our engagement shoot at Shelly Beach in Caloundra as it’s somewhere we love going for walks in the afternoon to chat after we finish work for the day.

How did you feel being in front of the camera? 

We were nervous as we’d never had professional photos taken before but Emma was so lovely and she quickly made us feel at ease!

How did you find your photographer, Emma Nayler, and what made you choose her? 

Emma was actually the first vendor we decided to book! I found her on Instagram and loved how she was able to capture the special, candid moments of other’s wedding days and knew we had to have her photograph our wedding. I would have changed dates just to make sure we had her on our day!

Do you have plans for your engagement photos?

We plan to frame and hang some of our engagement photos up in our new home once it’s built.

Did you have to postpone your wedding due to Covid-19? 

We did. We were really hoping to still go through with our wedding on the original date but as soon as we found out that Jacobs’ family from New Zealand wouldn’t be able to make it we decided we would wait until next year as it was really important to us to have them there.

What will you do to celebrate your would-have-been wedding day? 

We decided to have dinner at one of our favourite restaurants on the Sunshine Coast to celebrate our would-have-been wedding day.

Tell us about when Jacob proposed. 

We were staying on the Gold Coast for a night and Jacob proposed while we were walking on the beach after a really nice dinner he’d booked. I had a sneaky feeling he was going to propose as he seemed really nervous all night but I was still surprised when he did!

Where will you be getting married? 

We will be getting married at The Rocks Yandina. As soon as we viewed the venue and the relaxed, rustic scenery we knew right away it was the perfect fit for us!

What are you most looking forward to on your wedding day?

Being surrounded by our closest family and friends to share our special day together.

For some of us, the first professional photo session we take part in is on our wedding day. The day is usually big, and long, and overwhelming on many levels. An Engagement Photography session is not only a beautiful way to celebrate your commitment to each other, but could almost be considered a practice run for your big day.

A chance to familiarise yourselves with being in front of the camera and help you understand what works for you. It is a great chance for you to meet your photographer if you haven’t already. Utilising the services of professional hairdressers and makeup artists will have you looking your best – and ultimately feeling your best. This is a great occasion to have a hair and makeup trial. Combined with well-curated wardrobe choices, you and your loved one will be comfortable and happy, and this will shine through in your images. 

Be sure to choose effortless, classic styles to ensure your photographs remain timeless and become heirlooms that you will proudly share with your future generations. Often your photographers will have a style guide to help you select your perfect outfits. This will normally take into consideration the colours that work best with their photography style but ultimately it’s important that you feel comfortable, yourself and confident in your chosen outfit. 

Be Yourselves!

An Engagement Photography Session is a celebration of you. So remember to just be you! As simple as it sounds… There’s no one else in the world like you. These images are about your story. As a photographer, I know that many of my engaged couples have never had a photography session before, and can feel really nervous about the session. I like to gently pose my clients while still leaving plenty of room for them to be themselves. It’s a perfect mix between positioning and then allowing people to be themselves once they have warmed up a bit. 

Go to Your Happy Place

Choose a location that is your natural habitat; your happy place. It may be your favourite beach. If you’re into mountain climbing, perhaps opt to capture yourselves with a hinterland view. Maybe you love the country and want to make memories in a long grassy field. The photos will make the perfect keepsake and document this special time for you both. My clients often will print their favourite photos from the session or use them as “Save The Date” cards or for their online wedding websites.   

Remember who you are and let your photographer capture your connection. That’s the ‘you’ we want to see. That the ‘you’ you’ll want to immortalise.

Sam and Hannah are now married, but before they tied the knot they got together with their wedding photographer, Mallory Sparkles, to commemorate their pre-wedding selves. It was the perfect snapshot in time to, well take some snaps of this special time in their relationship. 

The relaxed couple took to Mudjimba Beach where Mallory made sure the images captured Sam and Hannah just as they are. 

Hannah said of Sam, “Both of us grew up in small beach towns on opposite sides of the world. This is what sparked both of our love for all things beach, nature, travel, and adventure.

“Being raised 8000 miles away from each other, seemingly we were two individuals never meant to meet. Against all odds, we found each other; soulmates. Together, we enjoy exploring, are major foodies, and have a laid back lifestyle.”

Chloe and Julian will soon be sharing their carefully planned wedding at Eumundi’s Imperial Hotel. Before the big day, they opted to have a test run with their wedding photographer, Graeme Passmore. 

Graeme says he can’t wait to shoot the couple’s wedding day in Eumundi since having a such great afternoon with them. 

“Chloe and Julian met me in the pineapple fields on the Sunshine Coast to play with that gorgeous afternoon light. They also brought along their big pup, Diego.

“Engagement sessions are just about my favourite type of photo shoot. It’s casual, we have no time limits and we can include dogs! Their chemistry and love is so evident. It shines through in every eye contact, smile and their silent complicity. It shines through when she laughs at Julian’s jokes and the way he looks after Chloe with so much care and tenderness.”

Engaged couple, Cecelia and Son took advantage of their complimentary engagement photo shoot with their photographer, Charlotte Gaspar Photography. All of Charlotte’s couples receive one as part of their wedding photography package. 

Charlotte took the pair up the range first to Gardener’s Falls to capture the magical serenity of the location for their Maleny engagement shoot. She surprised Cecilia and Son with some fun coloured smoke to add a little extra special element to their images. 

Then they traipsed on to the iconic One Tree Hill in Maleny, where a perfectly clear horizon revealed the Glass House Mountains.

The Proposal

Son prepared a lavish proposal whilst the couple were overseas in Santorini. He surprised Cecilia with a Hotel upgrade with a room overlooking the ocean. He then had a driver pick them up who took them to a remote location. Once they walked down the path, Cecilia’s first reaction was, “Where is the food?” A girl after my own heart. 

Once they reached the clearing they were met with a beautiful sunset overlooking the ocean. There was a romantic table set up, music, candles and flowers, cake and champagne. Son got down on one knee and did the whole bit. How romantic!  

Cecilia said although she doesn’t remember the whole speech, she doesn’t think Son could have done a single thing differently. Needless to say, her answer was an emphatic, “Yes!” 

The Shoot

Being quite an adventurous couple, Charlotte wanted to capture Cecilia and Son’s true personalities and have their photo shoot serve as a good representation of them. Two beautiful locations in nature, two outfits and some fun pink smoke certainly did the trick.

Cecilia and Son loved their images so much, they have ordered a canvas to display both in their home, and at their wedding in November.

Jessie and Dan have kindly shared with us their idyllic Australian Bush engagement shoot with Adriana Watson. The Sunshine Coast wedding photographer took the couple to one of her favourite photo shoot locations in a rustic bush setting.

Their Story

Dan and Jessie met at Rainbow beach in 2007 while working together at a restaurant, Dan as a chef and Jessie as a waitress. Jessie first noticed how polite and handsome Daniel was, and Daniel fell for Jess’s quirkiness, her smile and her laugh. 

In 2008 they started dating and it only took Dan seven years to propose. He surprised Jessie with the proposal while on a romantic getaway to Crystal Creek Rainforest Retreat and soon the decision was made to get married on their 10th anniversary. They have planned a vintage garden ceremony at Dan’s childhood home in Buderim and will be continuing the celebration at the Buderim Tavern. 

Of course the talented Adriana Watson will be there on the day to capture all the special moments as beautifully as she has their Australian Bush engagement shoot.
