Every member of the Senaratne Family is – or has been at one time – involved in the family mobile catering business, Journey Street Food. The husband and wife team employ their children to work alongside them in the kitchen and as servers for all the weddings they cater here on the Sunshine Coast.

The joy they share in the process of making and sharing food is abundantly clear in their dishes, which are as visually delightful as they are delicious. Their menus reflect their love of travel and adventure, with loads of flavour, colour and fun.

Ruby has been so kind as to share some of hers and her husband Channa’s food journey, and local Sunshine Coast secrets with us today…

Ruby, what’s your background with food?

We have worked with food for years, from Channa being a partner in an upmarket Indian restaurant, to having a cafe and a surf charter boat in Indonesia. We have also travelled (and eaten!) extensively informing our multicultural menu.

Share something interesting most people don’t know about you.

We spent 15 years living in Indonesia. Five of them on a surf charter boat from which we ran a programme called Holidays with Purpose, where our guests would spend part of each day helping out in community development projects on the islands off the coast of Nias post 2004 tsunami and earthquake.

You have a completely free day to hang out on the Sunshine Coast. Get out about! Where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with?

Channa is surfing! Usually at Stumer Creek in Coolum with our two boarder collies waiting for him in the sand dunes. I love First Bay, also in Coolum. I can easily spend the day with a good book under the pandanus trees, taking the occasional dip in the ocean when it get too hot, while our 8-year-old, Rohani plays in the rock pools.

Take me through your catering process.

During the week we are in the kitchen prepping with our 16-year-old son, Sunny, who is also our apprentice. We make everything from scratch – all of our sauces, spring rolls, samosa etc. We spend the morning of a wedding finishing fresh food prep in the kitchen, packing up and then setting up our gazebo onsite at the wedding location.

Channa sets up the kitchen equipment, and I usually arrive a bit later with the food. I make the stall look pretty and get all of the serving dishes ready. I love to use my parents’ handmade pottery wherever possible. Our daughter, Mahlia, and her gorgeous girlfriends arrive in time for service. They enjoy making little flower arrangements on the serving dishes and garnishing everything to look beautiful. There is alway lots of laughter, and often singing and dancing in our little kitchen… They also love being inspired by each bride planning their own weddings!

What do your happy clients always say after having worked with you?

That everyone loved the food! That we were really easy and flexible to work with. Many of our previous clients become our friends.

Family Feast Style Catering

Here lies a feast of literal proportions, as well as one to satisfy visually. The colourful Mediterranean-ispired spread by Journey Street Food was designed for an engagement celebration. A celebratory colour palette was enhanced with flowers by Heavenly Blooms and a relaxed backyard setting, transformed for the twilight feast.

Journey Street Food prepared a veritable feast of Spinach and Feta Boreks (flaky filo pastry fingers filled with spinach, feta and fresh herbs), Chermoula Prawns, Crispy Calamari, Stuffed Turkish Peppers, flat breads, Turkish rice and colourful fresh salads. These delish dishes and more are all available from their Mediterranean catering menu.

Passionate about food and family, the team from Journey Street Food have designed menus as an homage to their history of travel. As well as Sunshine Coast Mediterranean catering, they specialise in international street food with an Asian influence. Catering options include delicate fresh canapés, unique festival style meals to lavish exotic buffets.

Caitlin loves Jesse | Yandina Tipi Wedding

Jesse proposed to Caitlin while on holiday in Queenstown, New Zealand. As they took a romantic moment in a gondola heading for the skyline. Caitlin says it was an easy choice to say an emphatic yes, as she says her now husband is the most generous and giving person, who somehow manages to put up with her!

Aw..! We’re sure the feeling is mutual, Caitlin!

This beautiful bride has kindly shared some words about her Yandina tipi wedding with us today.

The venue

“It was really important for me that my grandparents were able to attend my wedding. And once you see the Hidden Valley Farm, it’s very to see why we instantly fell I love with it.”

The food

“We are both massive foodies; so quality Asian tapas, a grazing table, craft beer and espresso martinis were at the top of our list. The food was amazing, people are still raving about how amazing it was.

“Jesse and I had a private picnic in the macadamia orchard right after the bridal party photos. We got to spend half an hour with just the two of us, it was such a special moment where got to get away from the craziness of the day.”

First Dance – we had the whole wedding joined us on the dance floor for our first dance (because of Jesse’s injury) and we all danced to Jesse’s Girl – Bruce Springsteen

The biggest challenge

“My partner was involved in a boating accident 2 months before our wedding. He was in a wheelchair for the first month and crutches after that. He only took his first steps without crutches on the day of our wedding. Because we had a fair bit of DIY involved in our wedding, he was unfortunately unable to help. I think this was harder on him than it was on me.”

Advice for future brides

“Be organised. Not only do you save money, you also don’t have any of that pre-wedding stress in the lead up to your big day.

“Also, invest in a good photographer. Looking back on photos, it’s the little moments that you forget, that the photographer thought to capture that really mean a lot to you.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Tipi Luxe was our splurge. We looked at other cheaper marquee options, but we just had to have them.

Best money-saving decision: The Vintage Bondwood Bar caravan. We love craft beers and espresso martinis. So having Ashlea and the crew at our wedding meant that we were able to serve craft beers and spirits, as well as have a cocktail hour of espresso martinis at only a fraction of the price a venue wedding would have cost.

DIY: The furniture was dry hired through Sacred Wilde. So the bridesmaids and I styled the venue, this included going out to the venue at 5am on the morning of the wedding. The small decorations I bought from Kmart or made with the help of friends.

I run a hobby cake business, Cakes by Cait, so I made my own wedding cake. And with the help of other local cake makers, Cakes by Nola and Cakes by Zoe, we put together the serve yourself platter table.

Honeymoon: My partner had a boating accident 2 months before our wedding, so the original honeymoon was cancelled and we ended up having three honeymoons; Byron Bay, New York and Hawaii and then Bali. So I was one very lucky bride in the end.

Number of guests: 110

Wedding budget: Low $20,000’s

Actual wedding cost: Just under $30,000
