Julie loves Wernher | A Hinterland Wedding

It seems Julie and Wernher’s wedding was fated to be held at hinterland wedding venue, Flaxton Gardens since back in their first year of dating they noted it would be the perfect place to say I Do.

This couple made sure they stayed very true to themselves – and their budget – in planning their wedding. Even though it was often tempting to stray from the plan! One thing they were firm on after meeting him at a wedding expo was that Sunshine Coast photographer, Matt Rowe, was the photographer whose talents they wanted to have capture their big day.

There was rain on the day, but Julie and her bridesmaids were well prepared with the coolest mauve gumboots they found in a very surprising place!

Julie was kind enough to share more of her wedding planning story and all her best tips with us, so read on…

Biggest Wedding-planning Challenge

“Looking at too many options and starting to enjoy going – “oh we could do this” and then having to be realistic with budget.”

The Location

“We had a weekend away within our first year of dating for Wernher’s birthday. We did a lovely evening out for dinner at Flaxton Gardens , and loved the food and ambience. We stood outside the gazebo and a comment was made that it would be a lovely place to have a wedding.”

The Proposal

“After Wernher was away for a week due to work, we got a deal for a night away. It was a lovely place up the mountains with amazing views. After enjoying a sparkling wine overlooking the mountains, we went to get ready for a nice dinner out. Wernher handed me a treasure chest and said that I didn’t have on all my jewellery. Inside was the ring box holding the engagement ring. The kind, lovely (and yet horrible) man decided to wait until it was between the typical “perfect” moments to ensure I was not expecting it – and he succeeded!”

Why Wernher is The One

“He is my other half. He is very easy going and can deal with me when I am crabby or antisocial. He is a home body like me and always appreciates the small things I do. He talks to me about big or little things and will always take the time to listen.”

Our Next Adventure

“Household projects – there are a few things we want to do around the house starting with landscaping the backyard.”

Something We’ll Never Forget!

“Nearly forgetting to sign the marriage licence! We held the ceremony outside and just managed to get through the ceremony (with creative shuffling from our celebrant, Toni Collett) before it started to rain. About halfway through she made the wise decision we would do everything outside for ceremony, but officially signing would be indoors due to weather. By the time we headed inside we started getting all the congratulations from family and friends and were moved around. It was close, but we did the official part of the wedding signing…eventually!”

Advice for Future Brides

Work out what you both want from the get go otherwise others will influences you. Ensure that whoever is doing the majority of the planning – include influences from the other partner -and give them a dedicated job. Ensure that if you are not an organised person – have someone who is. Both as a planner for the day and for getting things done. Having people (not family or friends) organising set up and pack down is amazing and saves you having to do 20 things on your day. Lastly have fun and don’t sweat the small things.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: “Photography! We knew at the end of the day – all that would be left (beside the marriage) was memories and photos. We wanted the best, and we got it! Matt was amazing with photos -very easy going and professional and made me feel comfortable right off the bat.”

Best money-saver: “Emailing save the dates and invitations. Most of our guests had to fly in and a lot were from overseas so posting (and having the time to get everyone’s updated addresses) was not something we wanted to do.”

Accessories: Veil was borrowed from a friend and my belt broach was a family heirloom.

Holly loves Jesse | Fairytale Wedding in Maleny

In the wise words of Cinderella, a dream is a wish your heart makes. And Holly had her heart set on embodying the quintessential Disney princess the day she wed her prince in a fairytale wedding in Maleny.

She knew exactly how she wanted to look, so getting the dress right was priority number one. I think she nailed it, and without even trying I can picture fluttering bluebirds, puff-cheeked chipmunks and adoring white mice flocking to her!

The couple fell in love with the view at the picturesque Weddings at Tiffany’s when searching for their ideal wedding venue in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Then they chose wisely and had Matt Rowe Photography come along to capture all their special moments.

The bride, Holly, shares her wedding planning story and wedding day memories with us…

Adventure Proposal

“The proposal was an adventure. Jesse, with the help of my sister, Brittany, planned a scavenger hunt with clues located around the Gold Coast. Jesse arranged a driver to collect me and meet him at the restaurant where we shared our first date. Next, we went to the beach to go for a romantic walk with our dog Buster, who held the next clue. The driver then took us to Burleigh for a bike ride along the beach where we replenished ourselves at our favourite restaurant. The scavenger hunt continued to Mt Tamborine where a helicopter whisked us away to Tangalooma Island. Jesse prepared a private beach picnic and, whilst the sun was setting, he dropped to one knee and asked me to marry him.”

Priority #1

“The highest priority was definitely the dress. This is something that i have dreamed about my whole life having my fairytale Disney princess dress. I new exactly how I wanted it to look, so I wanted to make sure I invested my time and money into it so that it was perfect on the day.”

Biggest Wedding-Planning Challenge

“It would have to be the guest list and seating plan. We obviously wanted all of our friends and family that have been by our side since the beginning, but that also meant that it would be an absolute disaster if we forgot someone. Once that was sorted trying to figure out who was going to sit with who was just as tough to organise. After all we wanted everyone to get along and have an amazing night.”

The Venue

“Jesse and i had always wanted to have a wedding venue with a view. As soon as I saw the location I fell in love. The feeling I got when i first walked into the venue was exactly what I wanted. I had been to many other locations and they never felt right until this one. We both love the view of the mountains and to have that as the backdrop of our wedding just made the day even more spectacular.”

Tears Fit For a Cowboy

“The most emotional moment of the day was the drive with dad to the ceremony and then Dad walking me down the aisle. My Dads an old cowboy so he never shows any emotion but I could feel it building in the car ride. He covered it up in his own way by joking around a little but as soon we started walking down that aisle the tears rolled out and I had to try as hard as I could to keep it all together.”

Husband and Wife

“The reason that I decided to marry Jesse was because we share the same values in life and I knew that we could work together as an amazing team and i could not wait to share all my life experiences with him and call him my husband.”

The Vows

“I’ll never forget the moment we both said our I do’s. We said the traditional vows and we also read out our own personal vows to make it even more special.”

Advice For Future Brides

“It’s such a big eventful day so when you get the chance grab your new husband and just take a moment together. Also making sure you have a good support team to help you though the process as it is impossible to do everything on your own.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: “It would have to the venue. As soon as we saw the location we were in love with it and no matter how much the package cost we were having our wedding there.”

Best money-saver: “One of our bridesmaids’ fathers lent us the amazing bridal party cars for the day instead of us having to hire them.”

It was a special moment and it showed everyone the beauty of marriage.”

“Our next big adventure was planning our second home build. We both believe it is very import to have a happy and humble home to live and share with family and friends.”

Melina loves Michael | Maleny Manor Wedding

When friends introduced Melina and Michael at a football (soccer, but we’re calling it football in Australia now, didn’t you know?) game at Suncorp Stadium, who knew it would eventuate to saying “I Do”?

The Brisbane couple chose Maleny for their destination wedding on the Sunshine Coast, where they celebrated with 78 guests at Maleny Manor. They planned their Maleny wedding over two years with the bride using her expertise as an interior designer to perfect every last detail.

The Colour Palette

“I always wanted soft pink and always loved black… it then gradually evolved with the additions of peach, grey, gold and burgundy. I wanted a very elegant and classy wedding.”

The Dress

“My mum attended every dress fitting with George Wu – we both developed a great relationship with him. I was so sad to have to stop visiting! Thankfully my sister is getting married soon and he will be making her dress too so I will be able to crash her dress fittings so I can enjoy his great personality and admire his talents.

“I believe if you can afford to buy a bespoke gown you really must do it – there really is no other experience like it. Being able to work with someone like George Wu to create a masterpiece especially for you was so special.”

Mist on the Mountain

“It was raining all day! But the rain cleared just before the ceremony and lasted all through our photoshoot. We were so lucky. The rain left this amazing mist and fog that engulfed the valley, creating a magical romantic atmosphere. It then poured later in the night which allowed for some great evening rain photos!

“Don’t let the weather stress you out! It will be a magical day regardless.”

The Entertainment

“We had various old and new music by our entertainer Graham Hobson. He DJ’d and also sang live. I also requested three Italian songs be played to pay tribute to my heritage which was so much fun. It was great coz even my 80+ year old grandparents started
dancing.

“We also hired a photo booth, which we believe was one of the best decisions we ever made. It was so much fun and it was fantastic viewing all the photos after the wedding as we were able to see the fun that our guests were having that we didn’t get a chance to see. It is extremely hard getting to talk to all your guests so it was a small insight into their night.”

The Best Day EVER

“We both had so much fun and felt it was a true celebration of us as a couple. My favourite moment was walking down the aisle and seeing Michael waiting for me at the end.

“(It was so special) having all our family and friends around us in such a beautiful location. We thought our ceremony was very heartfelt and genuine and believe that’s what weddings are all about. The love.”

Ashton loves Beau | A Glass House Mountains wedding

Ashton has gone and snagged herself one handy husband. Beau is the clever guy, who built this amazing clear acrylic arbour for their Glass House Mountains wedding.

Aside from his flash acrylic stylings, Beau is pretty great at marriage proposals. He had organised a romantic candlelit dinner on a private deck for his love, and – this is key – he waited till after dessert before popping the question. Oh, did I mention this was while on a surprise holiday he had planned? In Tahiti?

Come on, Beau, you’re ruining it for all the other husbands!

Their Glass House Mountains wedding was held at Ashton’s parents’ property, which just so happens to have the most incredible backdrop of Mount Coonowrin. Then their 70 guests joined them for a beautifully styled wedding reception inside, styled by the team at Splash Events.

Matt Rowe Photography joined Ashton and Beau at this inspiring location to help them create lasting memories.

“The gown had a piece of my grandma’s blue shirt sewn into a bow under my dress as my something blue.” “Because we only had a few months to plan our wedding, it was extremely stressful. We had the wedding quickly because we were hoping to have my grandma attend but unfortunately she passed away before our special day. Even though we were pushed for time it made our decisions quicker as there was no time for procrastination.” “The ceremony was held at my parents’ property, which is set amongst the Glass House Mountains. Clear Tiffany chairs with white cushions faced Mount Coonowrin, which served as a beautiful backdrop.” “We got engaged after Beau organised a surprise trip to Tahiti where he proposed on a private candle lit deck after dessert.” “White, silver and acrylic were the overall theme. Beau works with acrylic, so it was incorporated into the day. Beau built the clear acrylic arbour and swinging cake stand.”

“The wedding planners on the day were a great investment as they help to keep the stress to a minimum.” “Instead of a guest book our guests signed individual acrylic heart-shaped jigsaw pieces.” “Crystal candelabras adorned the tables with long rows of raspberry-coloured fresh floral arrangements.”“We had three wishing wells for our favourite rescue groups and charities and our guests chose which one they would like their wishing well money to go to. We raised $3640.”

When their engagement shoot with Matt Rowe Photography photography was scheduled, beautiful couple, Josie and Chris, decided to go ahead make it ultimately fabulous. The groom-to-be matched his suspenders with his future bride’s crimson gown in a super stylish fashion feat.

Boho in style with plenty of colour to contrast with the natural Sunshine Coast beach setting and of course that brilliant horizon.

She’s got a smile that it means to me, reminds me of childhood memories. Her hair reminds me of a warm safe place. If I stare too long, I’d probably break down and cry.

Real Wedding: Maddie + Sam at Flaxton Gardens

Brisbane couple, Madeleine and Sam, carefully chose Sunshine Coast hinterland wedding venue, Flaxton Gardens, for the spot to say their vows and celebrate their holy matrimony with 80 of their closest family and friends.

A huge part of the appeal of have a destination wedding – albeit a fairly close destination wedding – was to revel in the planning process with weekend wedding planning mini-breaks in the 12 months leading up to the big day. Looking at venues and meeting suppliers was shuffled in-between soaking up the sun and cafe hangs at Cotton Tree. I can’t say I blame them, Cotton Tree is one of my fave local spots, too.

Their wedding turned out absolutely beautifully. You can certainly tell all the little details were planned with love. Matt Rowe Photography was there to capture all the special moments.

“Once we had our theme, the next most important thing was our florist, bridal gown, hair and makeup.”

“Being positive in all things you do really helped for stress free organising, and a stress free day!“

“We added the special touch of a vase of sunflowers to represent Sam’s Pa, who loved to grow sunflowers – it was very special for him and his family.”

“People say the wedding day itself fly’s by – that is definitely true! We found ourselves just standing back for a few moments throughout the day, to reflect on everything around us, and enjoy every second! It is definitely an amazing chapter in people’s lives, one we will never forget!”

“The planning stage brought so much joy and excitement. Travelling up to the Sunshine Coast, meeting with suppliers, and gathering ideas – we would camp at Cotton Tree and make a weekend of it!“

“After booking at Flaxton Gardens, we fell in love with a simple rustic theme.”

“Photography was the first priority after booking our venue. Flaxton Gardens served tempura prawns and gnocchi for entrée, chicken and beef for main, and wedding cake for dessert.”

Real Wedding: Emma & Josh in Maroochydore

Emma looked like a dream on her wedding day when she became the wife of handsome Josh. The pair chose a waterfront location in Maroochydore to say their vows before family and friends in a super fun ceremony, officiated by Sunshine Coast celebrant, Lynette Maguire.

Their memories were captured in an outrageously beautiful fashion by none other than one of our all-time faves, Matt Rowe Photography. The couple say the most fun part of the day was their bridal party photo shoot, mucking around and coming up with creative group shots!

“There are so many great memories from our wedding day but I think the most stand out one for me would be mucking around after the ceremony with Josh and the bridal party getting our photos taken doing stupid poses and just having a laugh.”

“The whole lead up to the wedding it did not feel real, as soon as I put my wedding dress on I got butterflies in my stomach and it really hit me that I was getting married today.”

“The pendants on the bouquet symbolise my grandmothers, two of which we have lost, and I had my dad tie a silver sixpence to my shoe for good luck. The ribbons at the ceremony were a Celtic hand fastening where friends and family ask us questions which Josh and I would then have to promise to – something to get the quests involved in the ceremony.”

“Josh and I really wanted a fun and relaxing day, more of a party feel then a formal wedding ceremony and reception.”

“The funniest time for me would have been the exchanging of our own vows which we had no idea what the other was going to say.”

“I felt so excited and nervous at the same time when I first saw Josh. FINALLY after 12 years I was marrying my best friend.”

Quirky Country Wedding in the Hinterland

Rebecca and Ryan met when Ryan moved in next door and popped his head in to say a neighbourly hello. And the rest is history, as they say! The pair decided to share more than a postcode. They formed a life, made a beautiful child, and grew a partnership along the way that lead them to their Sunshine Coast hinterland wedding day.

This fun couple decided to throw all the rules out the window, and simply infuse things they like into their wedding day. They enlisted the help of family and friends to help them collect material, doilies, jars, handkerchiefs and more to DIY their way to a wedding day that was truly “them.” From Rebecca’s vintage-style, strapless brocade gold, platinum and light blue dress in a floral pattern to the charity donation for a bomboniere, this quirky country wedding was perfectly left of centre. We love Rebecca’s unique vintage-inspired look, complete with beautiful makeup by KJ Artistry.

The Maleny wedding ceremony was held at Halfmoon Hideaway B&B on an outdoor deck under an absolutely incredible sprawling tree, and they followed with a catered Montville wedding reception at Montville Village Hall. The best part is, they were able to share the day with their gorgeous one-year-old little girl, Kiani.

Matt Rowe Photography took the couple on quite the adventure about the Sunshine Coast hinterland, finding some incredible spots for their bridal party photos, including an old milking shed! Groom and groomsman’s suit: Ryan found suits for him and his brother in a trunk in his mum’s garage a few weeks before the wedding!
DIY: Almost everything was DIY! Rebecca made a message envelope board out of old Frankie magazines and an old timber window frame for the guests to leave advice for the happy couple. She also sewed table runners out of different materials, lots of bunting out of her old clothes, and adorned all the candle jars with different types of lace.

“On the day it was unbelievable, we had SO MUCH wonderful help in setting up the hall and making it look fantastic! It took quite a while and everyone chipped in. It was definitely a very ‘community’ wedding.”

“Our family and friends collected a lot of things. My best friend’s mum collected over 50 handkerchiefs, friends and family collected mason jars, vases, lace table cloths, lots of doilies, food dishes, props for our photobooth, etcetera. I had such a great time making things though and we did it over the 10 month period so it wasn’t too rushed or hectic, and truly ‘us’.”

“Just do what feels right and true to you both. Do a lot of research, keep it in budget and don’t let the ‘material’ part of the day steal away from what you’re there for, to marry your partner. We were faced with a bit of misunderstanding with what we were doing, but on the day it all came together and everyone told us how wonderful it all was.”
