How to Nail a Tropical Wedding Theme – Minus the Tacky.

Minimalistic neutrals have been a mainstay of many 2018 weddings, and while we love this classic go-to, it can be fun to mix it up with a bit of colour now and then!

Chic Summer Style

As we launch into the New Year, we’re petitioning for the return of the bold and bright colour palette. Queensland weddings are especially suited to a tropical vibe with their temperate climate and sun-soaked year-round weather. Often when you think of a tropical theme, you imagine going a little overboard on the flamingos, pineapples and coconuts. Here we’ll show you how to modernise this balmy and fun, summer styling favourite.

A Flower in Her Hair

Continue your theme into your personal bridal style by asking your florist to craft a floral hairpiece. These pint-sized pops of colour can be positioned off to the side or even centred over a low bun. Now is also the time to be a little extra with your earring choice too. Don’t be afraid of opting for bold gold statement earrings or even a bright tassel! However, be sure not to over-do your hair and makeup with this combination. This look by Rachael Harris Makeup Artistry uses soft waves and a dewy bronzed-up glow mimicking the effect of serious sunshine time.

Festive Cake

The cake featured in this zesty and fun shoot by Milk and Honey Cake Creative was a deliciously on-theme tiered passionfruit and coconut cake. The top tier was covered in gorgeous gold, the mid layer in a coconut flake ruffle hand-painted with a gold trim and the base layer stamped with a beautiful ornate pattern.

Tropical Tablescape

Keep it classy by mixing textures and finishes to soften the bright shades of hot pink, orange, yellow or green. Golds and raw textural elements such as an unclothed wooden table or rattan place setting will elevate a tablescape instantly, so be sure to include these in the mix.

The styling here uses colourful tropical florals and monstera leaves by Clara Jean Events pared back with neutral tableware and gold cutlery. Alternatively, if you have your heart set on a few coconuts and a flamingo or two, why not select a feature colour and keep everything else super sleek and simple? This will allow your theme to shine without falling into the garish category.

Here you can see a mix of both pineapples and coconuts are toned down with the help of rich greens and gold finishes. Showing restraint with these classic tropical items will really modernise your styling.

Chanel loves Scott | Hastings Street Wedding

On the morning of her wedding, bride Chanel had her mum and her bridesmaids by her side. The plan was to create a relaxed, calm environment, free of chaos, to prepare for the biggest day of her life. Champagne, laughter and pampering made the morning a dream. Later on the bride walked down the aisle at Maison La Plage for a Hastings Street wedding ceremony to the ukelele version of “Over the Rainbow”, completely zen and ready to start her married life with partner, Scott.

Chanel shares some of the highlights of the day and how she planned her dream day.

Finding their Dream Team

“Once we organised our wedding ceremony and reception fit out with Splash everything fell into place. With all the suppliers knowing each other as they had previously worked together it came together very easily, each recommending one another.”

Tricky Proposal

“I had just come home from an overseas holiday and was getting ready to unpack and have a shower when Scott followed me into our bedroom with a shell jewelry box I had bought on my travels. He asked me if I had looked inside it and when I opened it and saw my beautiful ring we both burst into tears. He couldn’t spit out the question before I said ‘Yes.'”

Biggest Priority

“The highest priority was having a great photographer. I have always loved looking through photo albums and we wanted to make sure we had images that we loved forever and would never get sick of looking at.”

Wet Weather Back Up

“Our biggest challenge when planning our wedding was working out the wet weather backup. We tried to ensure there would be no rain on our wedding day so we married in June when it is relatively dry. Luckily we had clear skies but for the days leading up that was a bit of a challenge to organise.”

Big Love

“Scott is the man of my dreams and everything I could ever wish for in a life partner. He makes me laugh like no one else and continuously does things that make me fall in love with him all over again, one lifetime with Scott would never be enough.”

The Perfect Location

“Scott and myself had always holidayed as children in Noosa and it was the first place we went away together as a couple. It really wasn’t something we had to think about because we both had fallen in love with Noosa. Maison La Plage is located on Noosa beach; having a beach wedding was what we both had wanted. We were lucky enough to find such a perfect location that was so well suited to what we were looking for.”

“Our Photographer, Tara Lee, was an integral to how perfect our wedding day was. She took the most beautiful photographs and allowed Scott and myself check out for an hour while we had our photos taken and enjoy being married – we got lost in the moment celebrating and she was there capturing the whole thing.”

“I loved working with Splash Events – their display room you could get lost in. They worked their magic and made our special day so stunning. “

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Our Reception was our biggest splurge. We had always wanted to have a Restaurant cater our Wedding and for our special day to continue into the night with a beautiful Dinner for everyone to enjoy.

Best bargain: Our invitations, stationary and thank you cards we purchased online. We didn’t pay someone to create the design for us – we managed to find some we liked and the website allowed us to customize them for free!

Gemma + Luke’s Buderim Wedding

Bride Gemma went by the philosophy that there is beauty in simplicity, and planned her wedding at Buderim’s Wirreanda Park and Ebb Waterfront Dining and Cellar as such. The reception featured greenery only on the tables, which looked beautiful and fresh, but also saved an awful lot on the old flower budget!

The bride’s personal style was contemporary and ethereal in a custom-made gown featuring intricate lace bodice and a full flowing skirt of grey tulle. Topped off with a white-on-white floral crown, there’s nothing not oh-so-right about this whole vibe. We love it!

Sunshine Coast wedding photographer, Gavin Wyatt, was there to capture the entire affair with his distinctly creative documentary-style photography.

Having our beautiful almost 3 year old daughter there to share the day with was so special. She referred to her flower girl dress as her ‘wedding dress’ it was very cute.

“My advice to other brides: take rescue remedy before you walk down the aisle and a glass of champagne, it stops you from crying!”

“I had two great Dads and an awesome Mum. When the decision had to be made, I chose my Mum to walk me down the aisle, as she had being waiting for this day since I was born. She couldn’t have been more excited when I told her what her special role was!”

“I wanted grey in my dress, and I wanted olive leaves to be features in all the florals.”

“The bridesmaids were given a box of French macaroons each. The groom plus groomsmen were given a hangover kit which included mini berocca, Panadol, band aids and breath mints.”

“Finding a photographer whose work was a documentary/journalistic style was the number one priority. As well as finding the right dress that was unique and only made for me!”

Biggest splurge: The venue. We wanted something that would look stunning with limited effort.

Best money-saver: Having greenery only at the reception, rather than flowers.
