Tasleema Nigh has spent her entire 20-year career honing her craft. Straight out of high school she studied makeup artistry, and went on to work in fashion, commercials, and photographic shoots. She even worked in film, and came this close to doing Johnny Depp’s makeup!

For the past nine years, Tasleema has lived right here on the Sunshine Coast working in wedding makeup artistry, which she says suits her best.

“I’ve always loved doing weddings, it’s one day where my work is really the focus and is so admired for years and generations to come in my bride’s wedding photos.” Tasleema explains.

One thing you can say with absolute conviction is Tasleema is passionate about being a wedding makeup artist. What’s your process on a wedding day?

I always have my kit ready to go the night before so that I can arrive a little early to get set-up. Setup takes me about 15 minutes to get everything just so…when you’re working for 3-5 hours and you have a strict timeline everything has to be in the right place or I waste time looking for things. Because every location is different setting up the perfect station is always a work in progress! I have a run sheet for makeup so I stay on time and so everyone knows when to be nearby for their makeup application. I make sure I’m organised so I can deliver great results to my brides and clients, I think this makes for a smooth running day for the bride.

What makes you stand out in makeup artistry?

I think that would be my experience in the industry. I’ve had over 20 years experience in the beauty and makeup industry in all areas be it TV commercials, music videos, fashion shows, weddings, photoshoots, retail counter work, etc. I think I’ve tried it all! I was always told my makeup style was very natural and so here I am now working in the field of weddings where that type of makeup suits best.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

My husband and I met each other online back in 1996 in a chat room. He was in Canada and I was in Australia at the time. I hear some of my couples say they met their partners online and I always tell them our story. Back then it was so new to be meeting people online! Pretty sure that’s when the internet first started to become a common things in homes in Australia.

Once I got to work on the same set as Johnny Depp and met him. The worst part of that was he had his own makeup artist travelling with him (dream job!) so my services weren’t needed, but if he had of needed it I was the go-to girl. To be honest I got into makeup to meet all my celebrity crushes, one of which was Johnny Depp so I feel like I ticked that box off my list!

You have a completely free day to hang out on the Sunshine Coast. Get out about! Where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with?

When I get free days my favourite thing to do would be to go out to my favourite cafes on the Coast for lunch (breakfast is even better!) with my husband. We’re foodies and have been known to drive far and wide for some good food on our days off. I don’t mind the occasional day of shopping in Brisbane either. But mostly I love hanging out at home with my two Jack Russells. If they were better behaved I’d take them to the cafe with me!

What are the wedding makeup trends for 2019?

I’m really looking forward to this seasons weddings. I love how each year there is a colour or floral theme throughout the weddings I do. I’ve seen so many burgundy and dusty blue bridesmaids dresses and use of native florals this year. I’m really enjoying seeing all the reference pics from brides of their makeup and hair looks…I see a lot of fresh skin and romantic looks which I love!

What do your happy clients say about you?

I often hear from clients that I was calm, professional and made their day so easy. They also say the makeup I did for them lasted the day and they looked and felt like themselves but more beautiful!

I was recently asked to be in a gorgeous styled shoot with a bohemian bridal theme, set on a property in Maleny in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. So I said to myself, I said, “Sally, why not? Go for it girlfriend! Enjoy!” Then I donned a pair of boots and scooted up the range to be a model for the day. 

I felt a little like a fish out of water, as I’m far better accustomed with being behind the scenes in my sneakers and jeans than all dolled up in a dress! I have to say, it was a whole lot of fun to be pampered and prettied up for the day. It was a stunning setting and a great team of people to work with! 

My favourite part of the day was having my hairs did by the lovely Mia at Evalyn Parsons Hair. 

I love the creativity Hayley from Wholehearted Studio shows in her styling/ Bunsen burners and collanders – who knew they made such a funky decorative piece and pot plant to boot!

Brides, we know you all want the perfect dress for your Sunshine Coast wedding day. It’s the one thing you dream about as a little girl, and you want so much to feel like the most beautiful girl in the world on your one special day. Your husband-to-be simply must have his breath taken away by the mere sight of you. Am I right? 

That was rhetorical, don’t answer that. I know I am. 

One of your options when choosing a wedding dress is to actually have it made from scratch by one of those super dooper clever people, who knows their way around a sewing machine like nobody’s business. That’s exactly what one beautiful bride, Kate, from Wurtulla, did when planning her wedding to longtime love, Andrew. 

Knowing her particular vision was possibly not going to be found in the local dress shops, she went on a mission to find the perfect dressmaker, who could put together her dream dress accurately, while staying within her budget of $1000. Kate, what was the style you had in mind when you commissioned your dressmaker?

I labelled my style “Boho Ballerina”. The dress is based on a Johanna Johnson design. 

Was this an affordable option you would recommend to other brides?

It is extremely affordable for the quality. Considering only dupion silk and top quality tule was used, plus the inclusion of three fittings, I was charged an incredibly fair amount. I also sourced my own beading from Etsy for minimal cost. 

What made your dress so special to you?

I feel my dress was special because it was “so me” (or that was how everyone described it any way!) I tapped into my own style and decided to have my dress made from the beginning. I actually NEVER tried on a single wedding dress in a store!

Any other sage advice for brides when choosing their wedding dress?

My advice would be to go for comfort! My dress was made to fit me perfectly, so I wasn’t adjusting or pulling at it during the whole day, which was great.

The gardens themselves are meticulously maintained and delightfully designed, but they are also set in a prime position to capture a perfect view of the Glasshouse Mountains. 

Just try not to fall head over heels with this shoot. Try and fail, of course!

What do you love about vintage and retro styling?

We love that vintage and retro styling showcases femininity! It is glamourous, elegant, romantic  and fun. We are so happy it is being embraced by so many of our  brides! We do everything from authentic vintage styling to vintage with a modern twist. 

Does the 50’s glam hair and makeup look suit everybody?

Every woman experiences such joy when they have been given a style they wouldn’t usually choose for themselves! We pride ourselves on working with our clients to help choose a vintage style that will really showcase their features. 

Do you have to have a certain length of hair to pull off this look?

Depending on what style is chosen will determine whether you have the right hair length. 
Typically women in the 40’s and 50’s had their hair cut into a ‘middy’, which was perfect for a traditional pin curl set. These days this style of cut is not as common, which is why we help our clients choose the best look suited to their current style.

Who is your fave icon of time gone by to look to for style?

Most people refer to Marilyn Monroe as a significant figure of the 1950’s, which she certainly was! But for me, my style icons of the 30’s – 50’s are Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Susan Hayward, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and Doris Day. 

Where do you draw your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration comes from the photos of our grandparents and women and men of that generation. The styles we re-create were invented by women with next to nothing, yet they always put their best foot forward! To go back in time where women dressed up for the cinema would be a dream! 

What’s your fave variation of vintage styles for hair and makeup? 

You can’t go wrong with a fresh, brushed out pin curl set, dewy skin, winged eyeliner and luscious lips! This is my most favourite combination that just screams glamour!

Oh snap! Cold snap, that is… For those here on the Sunshine Coast, you will know what I’m talking about. The past couple of days, it’s as though the weather just realised it was no longer Summer and decided to finally fall into line and become the middle of Autumn. I’m not complaining, I love cardigan weather! 

I also love the warm colours of Autumn that are present in the bridal makeup for our turning seasons shoot in our latest free online wedding magazine. Kate Ellen Makeup Artistry did a superb job of representing not just Autumn, but Winter, Spring and yes, you guessed it – Summer.
