Inspiration of the edible kind is our favourite, especially when it comes in the form of wedding cakes, and dessert tables filled with delectable morsels, like macarons, cupcakes, cheesecake jars and the like. Who doesn’t love cake? Nobody is the answer, although obviously this was a rhetorical question. Anyone with a beating heart loves cake, I’m quite certain it’s a scientific fact. An if it’s not, it ought to be, am I right ladies? 

You know who loves cake even more than your typical warm-blooded human? Lorinda, the amazing talent and creative mind behind one of the Sunshine Coast’s most sought-after wedding cake decorating names, Ideas in Icing. Lorinda honestly is an ideas woman, and has created some of the most unique wedding cakes we’ve ever seen. 

We asked Lorinda to share with us just five of her fave wedding cakes from the past year… 

Number One

“I created this cake for a wedding feature in Sweet Magazine. I was given a colour (silver) and a flower (gardenia) and was told to create a wedding cake. I used a wedding dress that she found on Pinterest as her inspiration for the ruffles but turned them upside down so that the pleating effect was more visible and dipped the edges in silver glitter. The gardeniers are a symbol of love, purity and joy which makes them perfect for a weddiing.”

Number Two 

“This cake was created for a wedding inspiration shoot. It is a naked cake which are very popular at the moment. The cake itself was red velvet and it was iced in buttercream which has been scraped back to give a nice rustic effect. A funny story that goes with this cake was that during the day, someone accidently over balanced the cake table and the cake fell off and rolled down the hill. Consequently, photos from earlier in the day show it as a three tier and then it became a two tier in the afternoon.”

Number Three 

was a classic wedding cake design that we have made many times over the years. It has sugar flowers on top, quilting, lace and sugar stripes. What makes this cake really interesting (and one of our favourites of the year) is the LED lighting effect. The groom was a lighting enthusiast and he actually custom made and wired up a special stand for the cake. This was certainly a first for us.

Number Four

“I love this gold-striped cake. Gold is very popular for wedding cakes at the moment and I just loves the classic clean lines on this cake, offset with an oversized sugar rose.”

Number Five 

“Last, but not least, a very colourful cake. The couple actually used an old cake of ours as inspiration. They also provided us with the logo idea for the bottom tier.”

Amanda and Trev were highschool sweethearts, who fell truly, madly, deeply and hopelessly in love over exchange of sweet childish love letters. Those same love letters are the ones Trev bundled together in a vintage jewellery box for Amanda to open on her wedding day morning. How she turned up to her wedding ceremony without puffy eyes, we will never know!

This beautiful couple had a long engagement of four years before they finally tied the knot at gorgeous Sunshine Coast hinterland wedding venue, Flaxton Gardens. It was a perfect day, with their ceremony overlooking the gorgeous hinterland, which they say was their favourite part of the day. Kristy Ellis of Weddings with Kristy was their wedding celebrant, who engaged their guests and helped them to have the emotional, yet fun ceremony they had always wanted. 

We absolutely adore the colour scheme Amanda chose – the fresh white with hints of blue and coral are simply stunning and perfect for a Sunshine Coast wedding. We particularly love the florals by Ginger Lily & Rose Floral Studio with its nod to the colour theme in such a creative and intricate fashion. Love, love, love!

A wedding cake is such a focal point of the wedding reception. Many photos will be taken of it and it will be oohed and aahed over.There are many factors to consider when chosoing a cake.

1. Take the time to find a cake decorator that you feel comfortable with and will listen to your ideas.
2. Asl family, friends and even your wedding planner and venue for recommendations as word-of-mouth leads you to some amazing people.
3. The style of your cake should reflect who are are and/or goes with your overall theme and setting for the day. Or you can keep it traditional.
4. Vintage, rustic and beach theme are still very in vogue at the moment and lend themselves to various options.
5. Do some research and compile pictures of ideas that you have in mind and try and narrow it down to 4 – 5 pictures to take to you cake designer. They can then work on a design that suits you both. If you are unsure take a look at the cake designer’s previous designs, as they may have something that you will fall in love with.  Or they can work with you on creating a design.

For Rani and Alec’s beach wedding they prettied up a classic white sugar paste iced three-tier cake with colourful fresh flowers and included the unique and rustic touch of twine. The filling was Skye’s famous rich chocolate mud cake with chocolate ganache. Photo by Emma Nayler Photographer.

It was twine adornment for Sarah and Stephen’s cake at their Maleny wedding, but instead had talented Skye handcraft a sugar paste peonie. Their filling sounds absolutely drool-worthy delicious – the base was Cherry Ripe mud cake with chocolate ganache and the top tiers were white chocolate mud cake with raspberry swirl, layered with white chocolate ganache. Um, I just died a little bit. Of cake happiness. It was imaginary, and I’m back now…. So time for more cakes! Photo by Artography. 

Taryn and Adam’s three tiers look super impressive with a ruffled base, a little bling in the middle, fancy filigree up top and fresh flowers by Willow Bud. You can even go for the super cute option of having a likeness fashioned from icing of you and your sweetie for cake toppers! Then you can bite each others’ heads off and get that out of the way in the first few hours of marriage! 

Karli and Nathan’s three tiers were filled with chocolate mud cake, butterscotch mud cake and Cherry Ripe mud cake. Delish! The base tier  was quilted and studded with edible silver pearls, the middle tier decorated with intricate filigree. Image by Emma Nayler Photographer.

Two tiers can look just as impressive as three, all you need is a little bling. Amanda and Brenden chose a Cherry Ripe mud base tier and white chocolate and lime mud cake for their top tier.
