Kelly + Justin | Budget Wedding at The Rocks

Sally Townsend — Sun, 15 Dec 2019 19:37:05 +0000

It was Kelly and Justin’s main wedding day mission to have a fun day with family and friends without breaking the bank. Considering they managed to come in under budget, I would say – mission accomplished!

Bride, Kelly, has shared the details of her big day…

The Proposal

“We were in Wanaka – New Zealand. Justin thought it would be a great idea to walk up a mountain for our 9 year anniversary at -1 degrees. I wasn’t impressed and let him know about it all the way up. When we finally reached the top Justin proposed.”

True Love

“We met in highschool and have been together for 11 years. Justin always makes me laugh. We couldn’t imagine being with anyone else.”

Larissa loves Anthony | Yandina Marquee Wedding

Sally Townsend — Thu, 21 Nov 2019 20:49:00 +0000

Larissa and Anthony consider themselves very fortunate to call the Sunshine Coast home, and so going local was an easy choice. For their Yandina marquee wedding, they wanted their 132 guests to feast family style at long tables under a clear marquee with the stars twinkling above. The Rocks Yandina provided the perfect secluded spot for such a celebration.

Take a peek at their special day, which in my opinion has the best music selections I’ve heard of in quite some time, and some carefully curated elements that achieve both an on-trend and simultaneously classic feel. Larissa was kind enough to share the details of her Yandina marquee wedding…

The Location

“We chose to get married on the Sunshine Coast as we are lucky enough to call it our home. We knew from the beginning that we wanted a glass roof marquee reception and long tables. The Rocks at Yandina was able to provide this for us and all with delicious food and a stunning back drop. From the first meeting John, Michelle, Anne and the team were so accomodating and welcomed all of our ideas.”

Getting Ready

“On the morning of our wedding, I was surrounded by my lovely Mum, sister and seven of my closest friends.”

Stand-out Vendors

“Our standout suppliers were definitely The Rocks Yandina,Images by Luke Middlemiss Photography and Nat from Heavenly Blooms. They knew what we wanted even when we didn’t and helped us to seamlessly organise our day from beginning to end. I mostly found my suppliers on The Bride’s Tree, Sunshine Coast Brides’ Tribe and social media.”

Images by Luke Middlemiss Photography

Most Emotional Moment

“We both agree that the most emotional part of the day was meeting each other at the end of the aisle. We held each others hands so tight, it all felt so surreal. We were finally there are about to be married.”

Surprise Performance

“I will never forget when Anthony got up with the band, played the guitar and sang Ho Hey by the Lumineers to me. The most amazing moment! I was in awe of his talent!”

The Music

“We were lucky enough to have the Siena Catholic College String Quartet play at our ceremony and before our reception. I walked down the aisle to their version of Ben Folds Five – The Luckiest, it was beautiful. At the end of the ceremony we walked back up the aisle to Nat Cole – This Will Be (An Everlasting Love), and our first dance was a version of Elvis Presley’s Can’t Help Falling In Love played by our band The Easy Tigers.”

Check out this playlist of Aisle Recession songs I’ve compiled from those used in actual real weddings, as well as some of my own suggestions…

The Man

“Anthony is the most wonderful, kindhearted and generous man I have ever met. The only thing bigger than his heart is his smile.”

Hardest decision

“To decide if we should have a videographer. We deliberated over it for months and then when I was at my first appointment at Bertossi Brides, Joe’s (Joseph Bertossi) card was perfectly positioned on the shelf and the decision was made.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Flowers + photography

Bride’s dress + veil: Bertossi Brides

Bride’s earrings + bracelet: Stephanie Browne

Bride’s shoes: Nine West

Bridesmaids’ dresses: All chose their own from various stores

Bridesmaids’ shoes: Betts Shoes

Groom’s and groomsmens’ attire: Country Road + MJ Bale

Groom’s and groomsmens’ belts + shoes: RM Williams

Nat loves Tom | Super Fun Sunshine Coast Country Wedding

Sally Townsend — Wed, 14 Aug 2019 08:55:51 +0000

Sydney-siders Nat and Tom had one main priority for their wedding – fun! They wanted to laugh all day, and I think looking at their images we can all agree – mission accomplished! I had a lot of fun just looking through their wedding album by Alan Hughes Photography, especially seeing no opportunity to show off a few Dirty Dancing-style lifts go wasted!

About their decision to marry on the Sunshine Coast, Nat said, “I wanted our wedding day to actually feel like a fairytale and you can’t do that when your office is three blocks away. The Sunshine Coast is simply calm and charming.”

Nat generously shared more of their wedding planning details and sage advice for future brides below…

The Proposal

“I’d been travelling for work all year so Tom came to me and said he wanted to spend Christmas Eve just us. The night before he was frantically packing a picnic and whispering with my roommates but I just assumed it was about my Christmas present! Tom took me up to Luke’s Bluff at O’Reilly’s and we set up the picnic. I started pouring the tea without realising that my mug changed with the heat to say “I want to have tea with you for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me?”. Before I knew it both our mums and our best friends came barreling down the hill to celebrate with us!”

Standout Suppliers

“Alan and Harry our photographer and videographer were just so much fun. Their work speaks for itself! Cannot thank them enough for the memories we now get to keep! Sandi from Willow Bud did not have an easy task! My brief was that I literally don’t like flowers. She absolutely NAILED it on the day. I was walking down the aisle with a bouquet with the most divine mix of dried natives and what actually looked like angel wings.”

Most Emotional Moment

“We lost Tom’s mum only two months before the wedding. She was such a big part of our lives and of organising the whole day and we all wanted her to be there so badly. Her absence was painful but our families were all there for us. Walking down the aisle was a really emotional moment for the both of us, it’s such an overwhelming feeling and we’ll never forget it.”

The One Thing We Would Do Differently

“We’d probably try and be more relaxed after the ceremony, we were so hyped after it that it would have been good to take a beat and just take it all in. As for all our vendors I wouldn’t have changed a thing!”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: The dress! I couldn’t find anything else like it!

Best money-saver: We restricted our floral and decorations budget to a minimum and let the gorgeous barn at Yandina Station speak for itself, being particular in our choices of floral and decorative set ups to highlight the rustic appeal rather than going all out on flowers and decorative items that would take away from the venue. Also, it’s crazy how al the small things add up so DIY and Ali Express was a BIG cost saver!

Greatest inspiration: The Bride’s Tree, Instagram and Pinterest

Bride’s dress: Darb Bridal Couture

Bride’s shoes: RM Williams

Groom’s suit: Custom made in Thailand

Groom’s shoes: RM Williams

Bridesmaids’ dresses: Ali Express! The dresses were a bargain!

Bridesmaids’ shoes: Wittner

Flowergirl’s dress: Princessly

DIY: The arbour, menus, bombonnieres, name tags, seating chart and the welcome sign. Ali Express was the HERO for all things DIY; couldn’t recommend it enough!

Honeymoon: South America and New York

Number of guests: 85

Wedding budget: $60,000

Actual cost of wedding: $55,000

Unforgettable Moment

“Our dance was a little wild and very us. We threw in a few of our favourite acro flips and it made it so fun for us and our guests. From there the band really brought the dance floor to life, everybody was up on their feet dancing like maniacs!”

Advice for Future Brides

“Please stick to your guns! It’s your day, people will get over disagreements but it’s your day to remember forever! Take everything as it is on the day, even mishaps can end up being your favourite memory of all!”

Our Next Big Adventure

“Tom and I have a wacky dream of moving back to Queensland in the next 2 years to open a barn styled cafe on the Sunshine Coast… stay tuned!”

Whitney + Robyn | Sunshine Coast Country Wedding Film

Sally Townsend — Wed, 13 Mar 2019 19:28:37 +0000

One of the most beautiful things about a same sex wedding is that there is so much choice when it comes to tradition and logistics. Of course in modern weddings we can all turn tradition on its ear, but the level of expectation to follow tradition within families can be heavily felt by couples.

At this point in time, same sex wedding “rules”, for lack of a better term, are being written by each individual couple – or the rule book is being thrown out, is another way of looking at it!

I was very interested to discover the choices Whitney and Robyn made for their stunning wedding with all the trappings at the Sunshine Coast’s Yandina Station. For example, both beautiful brides wore traditional gowns suited to their own personal styles. Whitney wore a jaw-dropping princess gown with strapless bodice, while Robyn went for a full lace fitted silhouette and donned a veil. They both carried bouquets and had three bridesmaids each, who wore different styles and colours that all blended to create one very pretty pastel colour palette.

Logistically speaking, the brides took turns being escorted down the aisle and at their reception they simultaneously tossed their bouquets.

From the fashion to the flowers to the styling, Whitney and Robyn’s wedding was absolutely gorgeous luxury country estate wedding. This film by BXCSMXTH gives you a glimpse into the joy and love shared on the day, as well as all the decorative details.

Thanks for supporting our A-list Vendors whose amazing talents made Whitney + Robyn’s wedding so amazing…

Samantha loves Jesse |Countryside Yandina Wedding

Sally Townsend — Mon, 31 Dec 2018 19:42:07 +0000

For their Yandina wedding, Samantha and Jesse invited an intimate group of just 30 guests and spent a modest budget of $15,000 on what they call the perfect day they dreamt of.

Bride, Samantha, said, “I wouldn’t want to change anything about my wedding. I married the man of my dreams witnessed by close friends and family.”

Samantha kindly shared some more details from her Yandina wedding at countryside venue, The Rocks…

Sweet Simplicity

“We wanted our wedding to be about us and our love. Our wedding was everything we loved and wanted and the people who came were so important to us. We didn’t want a big fancy wedding but something simple and lovely”

Venue Perfection

“The Sunshine Coast is where we live and our venue The Rocks was so beautiful and ticked all our boxes plus more for everything we wanted in our wedding venue. The Rocks staff were amazing, there was always somebody around doing something and the whole day ran so smoothly because there new what they were doing.”

The Proposal

“Jesse took me to a very romantic dinner at The Long Apron, Spicers Clovelly Estate. Opening the menu folder Jesse had arranged for a card saying “will you marry me” to be on the first page of the menu. He got up from his seat and came and got onto one knee. It was so romantic.”

Images by Nicola Holland Photography.

“We found our suppliers at the Sunshine Coast Bridal Showcase, in the Sunshine Coast Brides’ Tribe Facebook group and Google.”

“My flowers we were so beautiful, I have dried them and they are sitting on my dining table still.”

“For our next adventure we would love to travel more and renovate our house.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: My wedding car 1948 F1 Ford Pick Up. These are beautiful cars so to find one for my wedding was very special.

Best money-savers: Mum made the top tear of my wedding cake and my sisters are hairdressers so they did our hair for the day.

Bride’s shoes: Sandler

Groom’s attire: Tarocash

Honeymoon: England, Scotland & Northern Ireland

Number of guests: 30

Wedding budget: $15,000

Jenna loves Sam | Westival Tipi Wedding on a Budget

Sally Townsend — Tue, 03 Jul 2018 19:28:05 +0000

Jenna says it’s lucky opposites attract, because she and Sam couldn’t be more different. However the important things they both hold close, like family values, goals and taking each day as it comes.

They were a most united front when it came to planning their country-style wedding day with festival vibes (or westival, as the cool kids call it!) They hired a bunch of food trucks and tipis to create their own idea of the perfect chill wedding day in Yandina with their 80 loved ones, and all on a $12,000 budget.

Bride, Jenna, has shared all her best wedding tips with us…

Choosing the Venue

“We wanted a September wedding so booking the venue first was a must, so we didn’t miss out on a date in September. we wanted an outdoor wedding with a country vibe which limited options. We also wanted a venue where reception and ceremony can be held in the one place.

“We had talked in the past about having a wedding with hay bales to sit on. Food trucks and bath tubs full of alcohol. Something very simple and not to structured.”

Biggest Priority

“We wanted someone to capture the day in the right way. I think the photographer is the most important to be honest. The day is a whirlwind. So you need to have a great photographer to capture the day so you can look back on the day.”

“Lee from Life and Love Photography was outstanding! I cannot speak highly enough of Lee. After all when the day has been and gone, photos are all you have to look back on to remember the day. I think this is one vendor that is not to be tampered with. Don’t call on a friend that’s dabbled in photography. Get a professional. Trust me you wont be disappointed.”

“Mum lit a candle during the ceremony for those who have passed or simply couldn’t be there to celebrate our day. This candle burnt all night.”

The Best Part of Our Westival

“It was one big party. It was so nice to catch up with family and friends that we don’t get to see often as we live so far from them. So to have them all in one place at one time just meant so much to us.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Tipi Luxe marquees

Best money-saver: My sister-in-law made our invitations and my mum made our cake

Bridal gown: ‘Sascha’ gown by Made with Love Bridal – White Lily Couture

Accessories: Hair piece by The Posy Co.

Shoes: Famous Footwear

Bridesmaid dresses: Thurley

Groom’s suit and shoes: yd.

Groomsmens’ suits and shoes: yd.

Rings: Bride’s engagement and wedding band – Diamonds International, Groom’s wedding ring was a vintage find (A gold sovereign ring. He has always wanted one.)

Honeymoon: Bali. We love bali as we got engaged there a year prior to the wedding. So we decided to go back to celebrate our honeymoon.

Number of guests: 80

Wedding budget: $12,000

The Bride’s Best Advice

“Keep it simple! Less room for error this way. In the long run no one remembers the finer details. Its all about having fun. The more structured the wedding the more that can go wrong. So this is why we kept it simple.”

Colleen loves James | Idyllic Maroochy River Wedding

Sally Townsend — Mon, 23 Apr 2018 00:06:13 +0000

Colleen and James planned their wedding overlooking the idyllic Maroochy River while living, working, studying and raising a man cub in Western Australia. It was a challenge, but they wouldn’t have it any other way!

Learn why they decided a destination Maroochy River wedding was a must for their big day…

Planning from Afar

“I actually really enjoyed the whole process and I am not lying! Planning a Queensland wedding from Western Australia was crazy with time zones. I was also working, studying and with a two-year-old – at times it was a challenge, but ultimately fun!”

Destination Wedding

“The Sunshine Coast holds a lot a beautiful memories for us. Our guest literally came from all over and overseas so we wanted somewhere when they could all fly into and have a holiday as well as attend our wedding.”

The Proposal

James had asked my dad, who nearly let it slip just before! It was at the beautiful Glass House Mountains lookout right on sunset… but I was really sick and didn’t even want to get out of the car. I was really glad I did in the end!”

True Love

“James is just such a genuine person, a true gentleman and he will help anyone out. He supports all of my dreams, happily moved from the beautiful Sunshine Coast to the desert of Western Australia for my job and is the best dad to our little boy, Rory.”

Images by Megan Willis Photography

The Venue

“Annie and John at The Rocks really went out of their way to make everything ran smoothly and the planning was so easy with them. Their staff on the night were beyond amazing too.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Photography and Music – so we had memories and everyone had fun!

Best money-saver: I made my own invitations which was fun and they turned out to be exactly what we wanted.

Nikki loves Pat | Country Style Wedding

Sally Townsend — Wed, 11 Apr 2018 11:45:52 +0000

For their 140 guests, Nikki and Pat set forth to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere, with great music, food and wine. And that’s exactly what they did when they planning their country style wedding in Yandina here on the Sunshine Coast.

Poetic Proposal

“Pat surprised me on a trip to London at Christmas with a sort of ‘poetry trail’ around London, where he used some of my favourite poems as clues to lead us to the next destination throughout the day. He incorporated my love of poetry, Christmas, adventure, and travel into the most amazing day, which ended with him proposing to me!”

Biggest Wedding-Planning Challenge

“Choosing the bridesmaid dresses! I had five bridesmaids; one lives in Kenya, one in Rockhampton, one in Melbourne, and the other two live near me (in Brisbane). It just made the dress choosing and fittings a bit of a logistical nightmare!”

True Love

“Pat is the kindest, smartest, most thoughtful person I know, but he also has a fun and romantic side which matches my own. He shares my love of music, travel, great food and wine… and he’s such a positive person. But above all of that, when we met each other, we just knew.”

Images by Gabriel Veit Weddings

“Evalyn is such a pro at hair. She instilled total confidence in me from the start, and not only that, she was there giving us all life advice on the morning of the wedding!”“On top of her stunning designs, Sandi from Willow Bud was fun and friendly, and super prompt and professional to deal with.” “I walked down the aisle to ‘Trumpet Voluntary’ played by fanfare team consisting of members of the band I am part of.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Probably a tie between flowers (Willow Bud) and photographer (Gabriel Veit Weddings). Both were reasonably priced, mind you, but they were both recommendations and we fell in love with their work, to the point I don’t think cost would have mattered – we had to have them!

Best bargain: Our wedding invitations – we got them online for a great price.

Bride’s dress: ‘Sophie’ by Karen Willis Holmes

Bride’s accessories: bracelet from Paddington Weddings, veil borrowed from a dear friend, bag borrowed from my beautiful sister in law (Mimco).

Bride’s Shoes: Shoes of Prey

Bridesmaids’ dresses: Sentani Boutique, Milton

Groom’s attire: Suit from Institchu, Shoes from Aquila

Caitlin loves Jesse | Yandina Tipi Wedding

Sally Townsend — Mon, 19 Mar 2018 04:33:44 +0000

Jesse proposed to Caitlin while on holiday in Queenstown, New Zealand. As they took a romantic moment in a gondola heading for the skyline. Caitlin says it was an easy choice to say an emphatic yes, as she says her now husband is the most generous and giving person, who somehow manages to put up with her!

Aw..! We’re sure the feeling is mutual, Caitlin!

This beautiful bride has kindly shared some words about her Yandina tipi wedding with us today.

The venue

“It was really important for me that my grandparents were able to attend my wedding. And once you see the Hidden Valley Farm, it’s very to see why we instantly fell I love with it.”

The food

“We are both massive foodies; so quality Asian tapas, a grazing table, craft beer and espresso martinis were at the top of our list. The food was amazing, people are still raving about how amazing it was.

“Jesse and I had a private picnic in the macadamia orchard right after the bridal party photos. We got to spend half an hour with just the two of us, it was such a special moment where got to get away from the craziness of the day.”

The wedding music

Walking down the aisle – Acoustic cover of Sky Full of Stars

First Dance – we had the whole wedding joined us on the dance floor for our first dance (because of Jesse’s injury) and we all danced to Jesse’s Girl – Bruce Springsteen

The biggest challenge

“My partner was involved in a boating accident 2 months before our wedding. He was in a wheelchair for the first month and crutches after that. He only took his first steps without crutches on the day of our wedding. Because we had a fair bit of DIY involved in our wedding, he was unfortunately unable to help. I think this was harder on him than it was on me.”

Advice for future brides

“Be organised. Not only do you save money, you also don’t have any of that pre-wedding stress in the lead up to your big day.

“Also, invest in a good photographer. Looking back on photos, it’s the little moments that you forget, that the photographer thought to capture that really mean a lot to you.”

Images by Brian Geritz

“Holding hands and looking at Jesse for the first time at the alter. A wave of happiness just came over me.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Tipi Luxe was our splurge. We looked at other cheaper marquee options, but we just had to have them.

Best money-saving decision: The Vintage Bondwood Bar caravan. We love craft beers and espresso martinis. So having Ashlea and the crew at our wedding meant that we were able to serve craft beers and spirits, as well as have a cocktail hour of espresso martinis at only a fraction of the price a venue wedding would have cost.

Bride’s dress: “Aster” by Karen Willis Holmes

Bride’s accessories: Earrings – The Silver Shop & Hairpiece – The Posy Co.

Bride’s Shoes: Betts Shoes

Bridesmaids’ dresses: Shona Joy

Bridesmaids’ accessories: Collette Hayman

Bridesmaids’ shoes: Betts Shoes

Flowergirl’s dress: Etsy

Groom’s attire: Politix

Groomsmens’ attire: Roger David

DIY: The furniture was dry hired through Sacred Wilde. So the bridesmaids and I styled the venue, this included going out to the venue at 5am on the morning of the wedding. The small decorations I bought from Kmart or made with the help of friends.

I run a hobby cake business, Cakes by Cait, so I made my own wedding cake. And with the help of other local cake makers, Cakes by Nola and Cakes by Zoe, we put together the serve yourself platter table.

Honeymoon: My partner had a boating accident 2 months before our wedding, so the original honeymoon was cancelled and we ended up having three honeymoons; Byron Bay, New York and Hawaii and then Bali. So I was one very lucky bride in the end.

Number of guests: 110

Wedding budget: Low $20,000’s

Actual wedding cost: Just under $30,000

Thank you for supporting our A-list Vendors, who helped make Caitlin + Jesse’s big day so darn wonderful…

Chelsey loves Luke | A Yandina Wedding

Sally Townsend — Sun, 11 Mar 2018 19:00:07 +0000

Sunshine Coast locals Chelsey and Luke recently said their vows overlooking the Maroochydore River at The Rocks. Located in Yandina, The Rocks is a secluded property, which is the ideal wedding venue for couples looking for a completely private country-style wedding. The rustic setting is idyllic with plenty of space to roam, finding those perfect little spots to cuddle up for a photo op.

As you will see, the couple kept their wedding day very simple by scaling back to the bare necessities – food, flowers, cake, and each other. They did some DIY and forewent having a bridal party, which they credit with saving them money on their bottom line. Impressively, they came in under budget!

The whole day was captured stunningly by Emma Nayler Photographer, one of the Sunshine Coast’s most popular and talented wedding photographers.

Bride, Chelsey, has shared some details on her perfect wedding day…

The Venue

“Our venue at The Rocks was amazing! It was so beautiful and such a lovely day. Everyone commented on how much fun they had we wish we could do it all again. Our highest priority was to have a fun carefree day that we could enjoy with all our friends and loved ones.”

The Music

“I walked down the aisle to ‘Here Comes The Sun‘ by The Beatles. We had our first dance to Al Green’s ‘Let’s Stay Together‘.

First Look

Chelsey and Luke decided to have a “first look”. This is where the betrothed couple meet up just prior to their ceremony and take a few special moments together, and have some photos taken before they join all their guests for the rest of the day.

They met under the trees at Buderim’s Wirreanda Park, and Emma Nayler Photographer caught the special moment when they first saw each other on their wedding day.

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: My dress and veil.

Best money-saver: Not having bridesmaids or groomsmen.

Bride’s dress: Grace Loves Lace

Bride’s shoes: Asos

DIY: Flowers

Number of guests: 80

Honeymoon: Byron Bay
