Amanda loves Milan | Fancy Fantasy Festival Wedding

Every now and then I receive a wedding into my inbox that’s almost indescribable in its uniqueness. However, since it’s my job, I’ll give it a go. Amanda and Milan’s wedding is like an out-of-this-world gathering of forest nymphs. It’s like Fern Gully-meets-Lord of the Rings: The Wedding.

The couple, whose whole hearts are exquisitely exposed in their wedding day album, met at a festival, and so their wedding was a festival style – right across the road from where they first met! Their family and friends all came to the party in their fanciest fantasy wear, making for the best dressed group of wedding-goers I’ve ever seen.

The bride donned a dress she found on Facebook Marketplace and had her sister-in-law revamp it, while the groom made and hand painted his entire outfit, including his crown.

How We Met

I saw the back of Milan across a field at a small festival and instantly knew that I was going to marry him. Shortly after meeting, it was love at first sight. We didn’t really even date, it was just perfect fit from day dot!

The Proposal

We woke up early one morning and Milan just rolled over and asked, “Will you marry me?” It was an instant already yes!

Ashleigh loves Megan | Maleny DIY Wedding

It was finally official when Ashleigh and Megan tied the knot LEGALLY at their Maleny DIY Wedding.

Ashleigh and Megan met at Big Gay Day, a Brisbane LGBTIQ pride festival at The Wickham in 2012. Since falling truly, madly, deeply they made their engagement stick by locking it in a few times over and, keeping in the same theme of doing things really thoroughly, they’ve had two official unions. The first was in 2017 before same sex marriage was legalised, so it was a civil union first time around.

Today Ashleigh shares the story of hers and Megan’s official wedding day – the one where they put in a huge DIY effort in an intimate ceremony followed by tea party-style reception in Maleny.

Why The Sunshine Coast?

It’s our favourite place to unwind, adventure, relax, holiday or day trip! We love the outdoors and we always choose the Sunshine Coast for our romantic getaways, beach trips and hinterland hikes. Maleny is just beautiful, we love being out in nature, the the birds, trees and fresh air. Having it at Ruddle’s Retreat meant we could stay there and set up our eclectic, vintage and antique, Alice in Wonderland-esque tea party, picnic wedding!

Standout Suppliers

Philippa, our celebrant, was also such a special part of both days, we were so lucky to have someone so commuted to helping us share our love story and legalise our love and commitment (twice!). Also, finding Adriana for our photography was such a blessing, she was so lovely, helped us relax and captured so many beautiful moments for us to remember always.

One Thing We’d Change

I would have had a wedding planner, DIY was great in that it was perfectly what we wanted, but it was also very stressful.

The (Recurring) Proposal

Depending on who you ask, the proposal started in many ways. It could have been a year into our relationship when Megan gifted me her family heirloom ring as a promise of her love and commitment to always be there through the hard times & the easy. It could have been when I offered to buy Megan a ring she loved & I asked which finger so I knew the size and she said “well I thought my ring finger”. It could have been when I presented her with said ring, suddenly very shy despite our many years together & told her I loved her more then anything, even (slightly more then) my kitty soul mate, Harry Hairypants.

Or, what we remember most was after my cousin Kat’s wedding to her amazing Mick, I spoke to Megan about how my terminally ill grand pop had told me that night he wished he could see us married (in mid-2017 this was not yet possible). So I said how about we organise a shotgun Civil Union, because I didn’t want to wait anymore. So we did, pop saw us united, it was the happiest and healthiest we had seen him in years. He sadly passed a few weeks after, but we know he held on for us, for our love.

How She’s The One

Because she is the kindest person I have ever met, she makes me laugh when I want to cry, I feel safe and perfect just as I am with her. I want to be a better person for her. Her beautiful eyes and cheeky smile light up my life. She gives the best hugs and she loves my cat, and all our pets, just as much as I do!

Our Next Adventure

We have just signed for our own little piece of heaven, an acre block in the beautiful bushy Lockyer Valley and we are in the plans of building our dream home for our four fur babies, and hope to also fill it with children in the years to come.

Kealey loves Mitch | Hinterland Chapel Wedding

They believe they were born to be together, and I can’t dispute that. Seeing Kealey and Mitch all loved-up in their wedding photos by Mallory Sparkles has my going all ga-ga for them and their hinterland chapel wedding.

The Proposal

“Mitch proposed on Valentine’s Day after 11 years together. He is a fly in fly out worker and arrived home that day. He had cleverly hidden the ring in the small container inside of a Kinder Surprise egg. It was the perfect proposal and very unexpected.”

The Location

“You can’t really beat the Sunshine Coast hinterland when it comes to a beautiful atmosphere. The Little White Wedding Church is just stunning and we fell in love with it straight away. It’s intimate and has a romance about it.”

Wet Weather Back Up Plan

“We had the rain throw us a few curve balls in the weeks leading up to our wedding day. Having an outdoor reception we had a vision in mind and the final product wasn’t exactly what we had originally planned but it turned out wonderful regardless. It took compromise and adapting to the weather but we made it work.

“Of course we would love to have had the sun shining instead of rain but other than that we were pretty happy with how it all turned out. When it comes down to it you choose your wedding date and the weather can go either way and you just have to roll with it.”

“We were so happy with all our vendors, we couldn’t have chosen better!”

“Make sure you stick true to what you and your future hubby want. You only get married once so be certain of your decisions so you don’t end up with regrets. Surround yourself with positive, supportive and helpful people throughout the planning and the day of the wedding.”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Hiring First Class Pet Wedding Assistants to bring our fur baby along to our ceremony. It was something we were happy to spend that little bit extra on to have our boy there with us. It was well worth the money spent and they were fantastic!

Best money-saver: We were lucky enough to have a family friend cater for us. It was a huge cost cut and everyone seemed to really like the food so it worked out perfectly.

Caitlin loves Jesse | Yandina Tipi Wedding

Jesse proposed to Caitlin while on holiday in Queenstown, New Zealand. As they took a romantic moment in a gondola heading for the skyline. Caitlin says it was an easy choice to say an emphatic yes, as she says her now husband is the most generous and giving person, who somehow manages to put up with her!

Aw..! We’re sure the feeling is mutual, Caitlin!

This beautiful bride has kindly shared some words about her Yandina tipi wedding with us today.

The venue

“It was really important for me that my grandparents were able to attend my wedding. And once you see the Hidden Valley Farm, it’s very to see why we instantly fell I love with it.”

The food

“We are both massive foodies; so quality Asian tapas, a grazing table, craft beer and espresso martinis were at the top of our list. The food was amazing, people are still raving about how amazing it was.

“Jesse and I had a private picnic in the macadamia orchard right after the bridal party photos. We got to spend half an hour with just the two of us, it was such a special moment where got to get away from the craziness of the day.”

First Dance – we had the whole wedding joined us on the dance floor for our first dance (because of Jesse’s injury) and we all danced to Jesse’s Girl – Bruce Springsteen

The biggest challenge

“My partner was involved in a boating accident 2 months before our wedding. He was in a wheelchair for the first month and crutches after that. He only took his first steps without crutches on the day of our wedding. Because we had a fair bit of DIY involved in our wedding, he was unfortunately unable to help. I think this was harder on him than it was on me.”

Advice for future brides

“Be organised. Not only do you save money, you also don’t have any of that pre-wedding stress in the lead up to your big day.

“Also, invest in a good photographer. Looking back on photos, it’s the little moments that you forget, that the photographer thought to capture that really mean a lot to you.”

Biggest splurge: Tipi Luxe was our splurge. We looked at other cheaper marquee options, but we just had to have them.

Best money-saving decision: The Vintage Bondwood Bar caravan. We love craft beers and espresso martinis. So having Ashlea and the crew at our wedding meant that we were able to serve craft beers and spirits, as well as have a cocktail hour of espresso martinis at only a fraction of the price a venue wedding would have cost.

DIY: The furniture was dry hired through Sacred Wilde. So the bridesmaids and I styled the venue, this included going out to the venue at 5am on the morning of the wedding. The small decorations I bought from Kmart or made with the help of friends.

I run a hobby cake business, Cakes by Cait, so I made my own wedding cake. And with the help of other local cake makers, Cakes by Nola and Cakes by Zoe, we put together the serve yourself platter table.

Honeymoon: My partner had a boating accident 2 months before our wedding, so the original honeymoon was cancelled and we ended up having three honeymoons; Byron Bay, New York and Hawaii and then Bali. So I was one very lucky bride in the end.

Wedding budget: Low $20,000’s

Actual wedding cost: Just under $30,000

Private Property DIY Wedding + Love Story

As a celebrant, a serious perk of the job for Fiona Duce of Coastal Weddings is learning the back stories of the brides and grooms she marries. She has been so kind as to share their story, and their gorgeous private property DIY wedding with us today.

“I went to Canada in search of myself, and instead I found you”

The love story between Tiffany and Tyler starts some 16,000 kilometres away. Tiffany was on a trip of a lifetime, packing up her bags to travel through Canada. But of course, life doesn’t like to happen the way we plan, and these two met on Tiffany’s first day in the country, at her first day of work.

The attraction was instant, and after a few weeks on a tasting tour of the city with work colleagues, they wound up being the last two at the bar. They talked for hours until the bar closed when Tiffany had the brilliant idea of going swimming. Now this wasn’t just swimming at a close by hotel – but Tiffany and Tyler trekked for an hour and a half to get to a lake. Tyler must’ve been so smitten by this point as at their first date the very next night he confessed he hates swimming anywhere but a pool. Tiffany knew at this point he was a keeper!

These two have experienced some amazing journeys together – travelling through the USA and Canada, to South America and throughout regional Australia. After a year on the road, Tiffany and Tyler settled into Melbourne and were relieved to finally live in a house rather than a tent or caravan. Tiffany grew up in Queensland and so they chose the Sunshine Coast as their wedding destination.

Close family and friends celebrated their wedding on a private property at Landers Shoot, with Tyler’s family watching on via Skype from Canada. Tiffany and Tyler styled their own ceremony and reception, with Tyler, a fully-fledged chef, making all the gorgeous food and desserts.

TIPS: There are so many lovely flower farms around the Sunshine Coast that sell directly to the public. Tiffany and Tyler bought all their flowers from farms and markets for the tables, decorations and bouquets.

Tiffany and Tyler found their wedding venue on Airbnb and it was the perfect place for their intimate ceremony and reception. It also meant that close friends and family could stay on site.

The couple saved money by making their wedding invitations by hand. There are lots of lovely fonts that you can download from the internet for free. Or if you’re not as design savvy you can buy templates that are already put together on Etsy.

They also made the welcome and direction signs ourselves for $40 and a trip to Bunnings.

Kat loves Shane | Country Hall Wedding

Kat and Shane knew a DIY wedding was going to be more work, but keeping it casual was worth it. Montville Village Hall really calls for a sweet DIY country hall wedding feel, and that’s exactly what this couple created.

Their original vision for their wedding was an outdoor wedding festival, or “westival” as those in the biz have termed it. Something told them to tweak the plan a little to be sure to have the option of a wet weather option, so they looked around for a venue that could give them the outdoors, yet have a structure available just in case. That was a well-advised plan, because it did indeed pour rain that very morning.

Although the day was wet, there were some special moments dancing in the rain that made it all worth it. Plus the bride and bridesmaids wore the cutest ever gum boots – very country hall wedding-esque!

After getting down on one knee I said yes. Even though I knew this day would happen it totally took me by surprise when he did it.”

“Waking up to darkness and pouring rain on your wedding day wasn’t ideal but with Alanis Morrissett “ironic “playing we started getting ready. “ “I had attached to my bouquet a pendant that was my late father’s wedding ring he’d had remolded. This was so he was still walking me down the aisle.” “We wanted to create a relaxed, boho, party vibe which captured our personalities and everyone could just enjoy the day without too much structure.” “For us personally (marriage) meant reaffirming out feelings and beliefs for our lives together and to join us all officially as our own family with our daughter.” “We initially wanted a completely outdoors festival style wedding but realized it was a lot of work and also wanted the reassurance of shelter if it rained the hall had a beautiful rustic feel to it, with enough space, outdoor areas and amenities.” Oh those country hall wedding vibes… “After trying a few bridal stores I hadn’t found anything I loved. With recommendation of a friend I took the risk and ordered one online. It took about six weeks to be made to order and sent. With some simple alterations it was perfect. It was comfortable, suited my style and being a bit cheaper, I wasn’t afraid to dance in the rain and have fun.” “I did most of the organising but Shane insisted in choosing the first dance and kept it a secret. The band performed a beautiful version of Paul Kelly’s “you’re 39, beautiful and mine” with an age change to 29 to suit us. Paul Kelly has a strong memory of when we first got together and the band did an amazing version. Jade loves Khyle | A Country Hall Wedding in Obi Obi

Brisbane couple, Jade and Khyle, tended as lovingly to their DIY wedding as they do one another on the daily. The pair enlisted the help of family and friends to decorate Obi Obi Hall for their catered reception, attended by 70 guests, to their exact vision. It was to be a sweet country affair, which first kicked off in a picture perfect ceremony at AnnaBella The Wedding Chapel.

When first planning their wedding, unfortunately there was a change of date, because the groom was deployed! Australian Defence Force Mechanic, Khyle, did his duty and a new date was chosen this year in April. Their Autumn country hall wedding in the Sunshine Coast hinterland turned out absolutely beautifully.

“My husband is amazing, I wish I could be more like him. We do everything together, we make time for each other. We prioritise each other and make sure we get quality time together to do the things that we love.” “We spend most weekends in the Maleny, Montville area, we got engaged at Obi Obi creek, and the countryside is one of our favourite places in the whole world. So our wedding theme reflected the country, natural and relaxing.” “Our main priority was making sure the groom could attend; we had already postponed the wedding once due to him being deployed!” “Once you get to the chapel, and see your future husband waiting for you, nothing else matters. Nothing.”

“We had our bridal party photos taken at the chapel, and then spent the rest of the afternoon getting more intimate photos of just us at Obi Obi creek, where we got engaged – just across the road from our reception.” “Sneaking off to get photos with just the two of us was the best decision we ever made! It gave us some time together to just enjoy our special day.”

Biggest splurge: Photography for sure! We wanted to have something special to remind us of our amazing day, and I believe we couldn’t have done better than Matt and Amanda Rowe! The photos speak for themselves.

Best money-saver: We decorated the entire reception ourselves, and planned everything. We had fake flowers for all the decorations, and fresh only for our bouquets.

Lauren + Byron’s Eumundi Wedding

When a florist is proposed to, you can just imagine her rubbing her hands together in gleeful anticipation, conjuring up all the floral delights she has dreamt of creating. That was certainly true for bride, Lauren, who didn’t have to look far for others to share in her enthusiasm. Her workmates at iBlossom were more than happy to plan and dream and create her floral arrangements. From her bouquet to her hair flowers and her amazing floral arch for her ceremony, all in pretty pinks and luscious greens, the girls certainly went to town on this Eumundi wedding!

“As a florist, I wanted flowers and beautiful gardens. We found the B&B in Eumundi and went for a look. The veranda was big enough to hold a party should it rain – and the gardens and view were gorgeous. They also created all the florals for our day. It was hard to step back and let them have all the fun – they let me do a few flowers on the lolly table between getting my hair and make up done.” “The weather is the one thing you can’t plan for – and in our case, we used the wet weather option and it ended up more perfect than the original plan. Ashleigh and Joshua’s vintage-inspired DIY wedding is adorable from top to toe, and they chose the perfect location to bring their sweet vision to life. The happy couple travelled from Hervey Bay to enjoy a destination wedding with their 36 guests.

Maleny is truly a magical place; it is home to some of the best mountain views you will ever see, the township is positively charmingly quaint, yet the region itself is sprawling and teeming with gorgeous little Bed and Breakfasts, unbelievable luxury estates, private holiday houses and of course wedding venues galore.

Nicky Stone Photographer was on hand to capture all the love, and the cute details, too.

“Pinterest was my best friend throughout the planning! I got the app on my phone so even during ten-minute breaks at work I could do research.“

“We make each other laugh. We could be having a terrible day, or just a little tiff, and one of us will make the other laugh and everything will seem okay.“

“I knew there would be a lot of vintage influence (in our wedding), as that is our usual style. Doing DIY with my mum and maid of honor meant a majority of plans were made with them.“

Best money-saver: Our bouquets, we hand made our own butterfly bouquets thanks to a post by Martha Stewart. This ended up costing about $150 total for all three.

Bridal gown: Custom made by a local seamstress $400

How to Style a Vintage DIY Wedding

Beautiful bride, Taryn, married her long-time love, Ben, in a sweet vintage-inspired wedding with loads of little details we just love. This is one of the prettiest DIY weddings we have ever seen, so we simply had to share with you how clever she is!

Taryn and Ben had been together eight years when they got engaged, so they didn’t see the sense in waiting too much longer to call each other husband and wife. And so they gave themselves only six months to plan and execute their dream wedding. A love of craft and styling, and also time and budget constraints, lead to Taryn going full DIY for her wedding styling. She came up with her entire concept for both her marquee ceremony decorations and her reception tablescapes.

Rustic, vintage, and a bringing-the-outdoors-in feel were all brought together for the fresh and details-heavy concept Taryn came up with. The result is a really pretty and stylish wedding that really wowed her guests.

“I found a tutorial on You Tube that showed me how to construct tissue paper flowers, and a friend gave me the heart garland. She is a school teacher, and had her students cut out all of the gold cardboard hearts for her own wedding!”

“I bought the card tags from Ebay, and made vellum-look stickers from Officeworks that I printed on from my computer at home.”

“I found the cutest silver tea set and cake stand from St. Vincent de Paul op shop. It took a littloe bit of work to polish up, but it was so worth it. All of them together cost only $30! I rented the typewriter from Fresh Honey Weddings“

“I wanted to include some old family wedding photos from both sides of the family, because none of our grandparents could be there on the day. Some had passed away, and some were just not physically able to be there for one reason or another.”

“My maid of honour’s mother lent me the beauty case she received for her 21st birthday 45 years ago.”

“Bride and Groom heart-shaped chalk board signs were hired from Fresh Honey Weddings.”

“I enlisted everyone to keep hold of their jam and coffee jars in the months leading up to my wedding and ended up with a huge collection. I removed the labels and wrapped them in hessian and lace. The flowers were purchased the day before the wedding at the local markets. My friend’s mother overlocked the edges of the hessian table runners, which I purchased from Spotlight. LOVE bunting was also hired from Fresh Honey Weddings. Our wedding faviours for our guests were a variety of olive oils that I made myself. Some had balsamic and thyme, others had rosemary, chilli and garlic.”

“My mum has a beautiful collection of vintage tea cups. My favourites are the Royal Dalton pieces, which I placed on each table with more tissue paper flowers in them. So pretty!”
