The 1970’s were all about individuality, and the hippy influence found its way into many a free-spirited wedding. This outdoor retro wedding inspiration shoot has that deliciously 70’s relaxed retro vibe from bare feet to Kombi van photo booth. 

A local crew of wedding vendors took to Blackwattle Farm to create an authentically retro wedding style that works beautifully for an outdoor wedding with those westival vibes. The rustic location allows plenty of space for a caravan bar and photo booth consisting of a Kombi van converted for the purpose of capturing fun photos between family and friends.

The Ceremony

A barefoot ceremony for true flower children with nothing but love to celebrate on their big day. Unique styling byThe Vintage Stockroom with rattan pieces, and asymmetrical statement arbour. Finishing it off with a pop of colour are the florals in green glass vases. 

Retro Colour Palette

Inspired by the Monarch Butterfly, the team utilised a rustic warm toned colour palette from rich orange and red to rusty brown, golden and brass tones. A beautifully constructed bouquet of Dahlia’s Roses, Pussy Tails, Wheat, Gum and billy buttons by Magnolia Grove added a burst of colour to draw the eye. 

Coolest of the Cool

Not your average photo booth, the converted VW Kombi brings next level coolness to the occasion. The Kombi Photo Booth has beautiful warm handcrafted timber throughout, a cushioned wooden fiver-seater bench and extra ottomans inside to fit in a few more friends, too. 

The Reception

A cosy outdoor lounge area with grazing platter picnic, obviously being how most hippies-at-heart would want to spend their wedding day, was set up complete with brass bar cart for cocktails and golden velvet lounge.

Rhiannon and James met in their high school history class. And the rest is history… Boom, tish! 

I actually feel like this little play on words has been building up my whole life. It really helps that bride, Rhiannon, grew up to be a history teacher herself! I guess that class really made a lasting impression… one that will, quite literally, go down in history – at least, Rhiannon and James’ history! Okay. I’ll stop. 

Fated to be together, obviously, the pair spend a good 12 months planning their wedding with vintage vibes. The bride drew inspiration from the 1950’s in her choice of bridesmaids dresses, which her late Nanna would have adored. The bride herself donned ultra glam old hollywood waves in her hair and a flattering long-sleeved lace gown to suit the romantic setting for her Sunshine Coast Hinterland Wedding. Her look was topped off with a dreamy romantic bouquet by Sunshine Coast florist, Woods & Bloom in her signature unruly style, featuring the Rhiannon’s favourite bloom – the prettiest of pink peonies.

A chance meeting at a local surf club here on the Sunshine Coast lead to happily ever after for Victorian Emilie and Queenslander, Ben. Her trip to Queensland yielded much more than she bargained for, and she ended up moving interstate just a few months later. 

When it came to their wedding day, Emilie and Ben wanted nothing more than to have all their family and friends in one place for a few days to enjoy each others’ company in a relaxed atmosphere. Noosa North Shore Retreat provided the perfect rustic setting with both the beach and the bush, and made for some really fun bridal party photos when the large group trekked out in gum boots and all. 

Bride, Emilie, says her Noosa North Shore Wedding was so much fun and such a perfect reflection of her and her now husband as a couple, she would do it all again.

Biggest splurge: For the wedding day itself, we spent the most on our photographers, Matt and Amanda Rowe. They were amazing on the day having to deal with our massive bridal party and the photos turned out perfect.

Best bargain: My wonderful friend, Sally, who was our celebrant not only offered her services for free but also organised the best wedding cake ever as our wedding gift. She made our ceremony perfect and the cake was to die for. It was wheels of cheese!

We wanted the whole process to be stress free so we got it all done as quick as possible so then I could just focus on all the fun stuff such as the decorations.”

Ashleigh and Joshua’s vintage-inspired DIY wedding is adorable from top to toe, and they chose  the perfect location to bring their sweet vision to life. The happy couple travelled from Hervey Bay to enjoy a destination wedding with their 36 guests. 

Maleny is truly a magical place; it is home to some of the best mountain views you will ever see, the township is positively charmingly quaint, yet the region itself is sprawling and teeming with gorgeous little Bed and Breakfasts,  unbelievable luxury estates, private holiday houses and of course wedding venues galore. 

Nicky Stone Photographer was on hand to capture all the love, and the cute details, too. 

“Pinterest was my best friend throughout the planning! I got the app on my phone so even during ten-minute breaks at work I could do research.“

“We make each other laugh. We could be having a terrible day, or just a little tiff, and one of us will make the other laugh and everything will seem okay.“

“I knew there would be a lot of vintage influence (in our wedding), as that is our usual style. Doing DIY with my mum and maid of honor meant a majority of plans were made with them.“

Tom and Katie wanted their guests to have a lot of fun at their wedding, and what says fun more than lawn games? Croquet and boche and badminton had guests mingling and enjoying themselves at the Yandina Station wedding on the Sunshine Coast. CL Weddings and Events provided the lawn games gear, which was a real hit with all the guests, young and young at heart!

The pretty vintage styling included a lot of DIY by the couple and their families, with the rustic country venue lending itself to the theme quite nicely. In fact, Yandina Station is a very versatile location – it was also the place we chose to have our Mexican Wedding Fiesta styled shoot in Volume 3 of The Bride’s Tree free online bridal magazine. We love a wedding on a working Australian cattle station, it’s surprisingly romantic!

“For Tom I secretly stitched a little message on a handkerchief that he carried on the day and sent a little love letter to his cabin the morning of our wedding.“

“Tom and I met at dinner at a mutual friends house.I had just learnt how to solve a Rubik’s Cube in less than a minute.  Tom sat down beside me and asked if I could teach him how to solve it too.  We spent the rest of the night next to each other solving the Rubik’s Cube.  By the end of the night Tom had a set of instructions and my phone number.“

“The whole wedding was the creation of what I had dreamed of for many years (and had pinned on my Pinterest board.  I had heaps of ideas, Tom chose the best ones and my Mum and Dad helped make them a reality.  All of our friends and family were involved in the planning by collecting vintage bits and pieces in the lead up to the wedding.”

“We knew very early on that we were going to get married – we probably decided about six months in but knew we had a lot of growing and learning to do first.”

Bridal gown: Made by a local friend, Lisa Cox. My Mum and I designed the dress and chose the lace and satin together.  We bought the material from the Fabric Collection 

Accessories: My earrings were from Myer, I made my own hairpiece with fresh flowers and my garter (original venetian lace) was borrowed from a lovely friend who wore it on her wedding day.

Shoes: My shoes were little blue heels (my something blue) from eBay.

Bridesmaid dresses: Casar Elegance in Queens Street Mall 

Bridesmaids’ accessories: Earrings from Myer and shoes from eBay also. Clutch bags were handmade by me and cardigans were bought from a small shop somewhere…

Flower Girl accessories: Dress and shoes from Light in the Box  and hair piece from Summerblossom

Groom’s suit and shoes: The boys bought their suits and shirts from Roger David at DFO (big savings!) and used their own belts and shoes.  We bought their ties and personalised cufflinks form DFO also.

Rings: My stunning engagement ring and our wedding rings were designed and hand-crafted by my Uncle, Peter Drane, who owns Diamonds of Distinction in Buderim.

DIY: Our styling, all flowers, table decorations, signs, table centrepieces, doily bunting, wedding favours, stationery, and cake. For their bombonieres, Katie made macarons in three flavours and packed them in stamped glassine bags from Etsy.

“I wanted to use as many of the items that I already owned as possible.  I love collecting eclectic vintage pieces and already had a large collection of jars, cameras, books and nick-nacks before we were engaged.  We were after a young, fun, relaxed, vintage vibe which we found really easy to create at Yandina Station.“

“At the reception, Tom presented a speech he had secretly written for me listing his ‘everyday vows’ which included letting me put pretty things up around the house, always saving the last TimTam for me and a promise to never leave his smelly soccer gear in our room.”

Good day to you, lovely Sunshine Coast brides! It delights me to kick off this beautiful Monday morning with an absolutely gorgeous Sunshine Beach wedding. Hands-down, the star of this wedding is, as it should be, the bride, Kelly. She absolutely shines with her 1950’s-inspired hair and makeup with a contemporary twist.

The other shining brilliance is the photography, so wonderfully captured by one of our all-time favourite Sunshine Coast wedding photographers,  Andrea Sproxton Photography. These are some of the most gorgeous photos we have ever featured on The Bride’s Tree; we are extremely excited to share them with you! 

After Kelly and Jordan’s ceremony at Lake Weyba Cottages, their 65 guests joined them at Coconut Grove Bar & Bistro for a sit-down reception dinner of delicious fine food. The bride and groom placed highest importance on the photography and reception venue, saving money elsewhere by doing lots of DIY. The clever bride played florist for the day, constructing the beautifully coloured bouquets. 

The couple’s friends and family came from Sydney, Melbourne, and Townsville to celebrate this wonderful union of two long-time locals, who met as primary school children. Their attendants were their close friends and the groom’s brother, who were treated to gifts from the couple – the groomsmen receiving beautiful Parker pens, and the bridesmaids receiving matching silk dressing gowns. Having family and friends close for their special day was of utmost importance and joy to the couple.

It was a quick engagement for Emily and Mark, who planned their Mooloolaba wedding in only 7 months. Having known each other for 14 years since meeting at church, they simply did not see the need to muck about. The beautiful bride says they each complement one another and they are, quite simply, best friends. Aw!

Mark’s pastor dad married the pair at Penny Lane Park, and then they kicked on with a shin dig at waterfront venue, Mooloolaba Surf Club. Their strict budget of $10,000 stretched to accommodate 100 guests, who started the day with a super sweet treat of fairy floss while they anticipated the bride’s arrival.

The bride styled the wedding herself with cute little touches, such as scrabble pieces, vintage books and hessian touches for a little coastal rustic charm. The day was captured beautifully by Sunshine Coast photographer, Kristy Whittington from A Look Photography.

We fell head over heals for this wedding in the Sunshine Coast hinterland at one of our all-time fave wedding venues. 

One clever bride shared exactly how she begged, borrowed and rented her way to vintage DIY wedding success. 

We dove into our Thing Finder Files to bring you some of the best wedding favour, guest book, place card and gift ideas we've seen to date. 

Just for all of you beautiful blonde brides out there, we shared nine amazing upstyles for our fair haired friends. 

The work week was ended with the most comprehensive list of items for a wedding day emergency kit we've ever happened upon. 

Of course yesterday was Photo of the Week day, and my goodness it was a bee-yoo-ti-ful one from a Maleny engagement shoot!

Despite a bit of rain in the morning, the afternoon cleared up beautifully, and this lovely young couple were able to be married under a spectacular fig tree in a whimsical garden party wedding ceremony, as they had lovingly planned for 12 months. 12 months and eight years in actuality lead them to this point, their extra special Yandina Station wedding day.

It was upon the recommendation of their Sunshine Coast wedding decorators, Lovebird Weddings, that Brisbane couple, Carly and Anthony, looked at Yandina Station for their Sunshine Coast wedding venue. After hearing all their plans for crochet, punch and garden party fun, that these seasoned professionals knew a Yandina Station wedding would be just the ticket. Carly and Anthony loved that they could have their ceremony, reception and accommodation all in one secluded place – and of course that it fit perfectly with their garden party theme, of course!

 The styling by Lovebird Weddings was simply gorgeous, and Carly added a few of her own touches as well, such as a chalkboard menu, two vintage glass drink dispensers with 80 vintage milk bottles for the guests to hold their punch, and an old typewriter, so guests could type up their guestbook entries and hang them to a potted gold branch, borrowed from a kind neighbour. What a fabulous idea!

Carly and Anthony’s 100 guests were treated to a banquet-style meal, which they felt would encourage conversation and a fun atmosphere amongst the tables of guests. Dancing and live entertainment topped off their special day, which was captured so beautifully by Alison Beal Lifestyle Photography.

“I attached a gorgeous brooch to my bouquet that was Nanna’s my mum lent it to me for the day. It was a special touch for me.”

“Through thick and thin our loyalty to each other prevails. Good times and bad times we stick together no matter how hard and it has made us a stronger couple. We never stop trying for the sake of our relationship. The more you put in the more you get out.”

"My very talented cousin sang a song for us while we were signing. I asked my uncle who is my god father and his wife to witness the marriage certificate, they travelled from Ireland for the wedding and I think they were pretty chuffed to have such an important job. "

"We always wanted a vintage whimsical garden party. Something that reflected as both as a couple and wasn’t a cookie cutter wedding."

"We used the property on the station for all of our photos, it is just a gorgeous location and anyone who has been will agree. So picturesque."

“My cousin’s boyfriend painted and sanded back photo frames for me to create rustic frames to put the table names in – which were all places that mean something to Anthony and I. Each table had a little story about the table name.”

“Anthony’s best man and his partner also made us a post wedding recovery box filled with necesseties like powerade, panadol and chocolate, which was a great idea and was put to great use.”

A word of advice from the bride:

"Our one biggest regret, not videoing the wedding. To all brides to be – do not forget this part. So important.”

Accessories: Secrets Shhh earrings, Thomas Sabo Pearl Bracelet, head band also made by Allure Bridal and Evening Couture.

Shoes: Zoe Wittner white satin heels with soles were covered in sparkles for the ceremony, Mollini flats for dancing the night away at the reception.

Groom’s and groomsmens’ suits and shoes: Suit, vest and shirt by Connor, tie by Country Road and shoes by Julius Marlow.

DIY: Wedding stationery, bombonieres and framed table names.

Total wedding cost: Almost $30,000… almost double the original budget! The cost was shared between the couple and both sets of parents.

The Hand-picked Team That Made It All Happen (And the bride’s glowing recommendations!)

Photographer: Alison Beal Lifestyle Photography – she is AMAZING! Would recommend her 100 times over, after having both an engagement shoot with her and having her take our wedding photos, anytime we need a photographer in the future we will definitely use Alison.

Florist: Mondo Floral Designs in Maleny. The bouquets and floral styling were to die for. Terri Anne is amazing.  We took all the flowers from the reception tables to my nanna’s grave after the wedding – it made us feel like she was there celebrating with us. There was probably a metre-by-metre carpet of beautiful flowers surrounding her grave site.

Caterer: The Rolling Dolmade Catering from Noosa. Matt Gilinskie is the owner of the company and he should be extremely impressed by his staff – we were! Nothing but professional, no one was ever without a drink the whole night.  The food was divine. Everyone commented on how great the shared banquet idea was, and the triple smoked glazed ham from the baguette bar later in the night.

Bombonnieres: I bought 100 plastic spades from The Princess and The Pirate and little organza bags to put them in. I filled the bags with heart beat lollies (the ones in a pink wrapper with a cute quote printed on them) and made up gift tags to attach with coloured ribbon that said “We Dig You”.

Makeup Artist: Sally Townsend Makeup Artistry! Just the bees knees. From my trial to my wedding make up, my whole experience with Sally was just delightful.

Hair Stylist: My hairdressers Teneille and Margaret from Recre8 Salon in Brisbane came up for the day and styled mine, the bridesmaids and my mum’s hair. They are both lovely ladies and did an amazing job! I was so grateful to them both for travelling from Brisbane for me.

Rentals: Noosa Party Hire. Megan was fantastic, we liaised via email regarding all our needs for the day – she was professional, friendly and prompt to deal with. Ray set up the marquee for us and even went to the trouble of adding on a wall in case of rain blowing through on the night.

Decorators: Trudy and Nadia from Lovebird Weddings. This duo is just amazing. From the very beginning they were on the ball and knew exactly what I was looking for. From suggesting the venue, all the way through to turning my visions into a reality. Without their help our day would not have been a truly personal ode to our relationship!

Transport: We used Noosa Hinterland Tours. Terry was fantastic!

Entertainment: Marty Sima. Fabulous vocals, great variety, he really added to the ambiance of the night. During the garden party he roamed around the guests singing and strumming his guitar.

Celebrant: Mary Elizabeth Baker. We both loved her and thought she did a great job of making our ceremony reflect the two of us as a couple. It was personalised and memorable.
