You may have noticed Gwen Floral Co. is not named after its owner, Sarah Luthy. In fact, Sarah named her business in honour of her late grandmother, Gwen. (Cue tears!) Gwen always nurtured her granddaughter’s creative endeavours – little crafts, seashell collecting, piano-playing, and in her final days, flowers.

I would venture to say Sarah is doing her grandmother proud with her beautiful creations and heartfelt approach to her craft and business. I asked Sarah to let us in on what makes her tick, how she got started in wedding floristry, and what’s trending in 2020-2021 wedding flowers!

Sarah, tell me about how you came to work in the wedding industry.

I’ve always loved weddings. I remember when I was 12 and I was invited to my older cousin’s wedding, I was SO excited. I paid so much attention to the details — I still remember the favours, the seating chart, the dress, the moment she walked down the aisle.

My love for weddings was reignited when I got married in 2016 – this was around the time I was creating flowers for my friends’ weddings. I loved planning my own wedding and communicating with my various suppliers, and not long after I got married, I decided I wanted to work in the wedding industry!

The business is three-years-old now, which feels so young, but at the same time I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’ve been blown away with the growth of the business over the last three years and am honoured that so many couples have chosen US to play a part in their day. As the business was quickly growing, I realised that I couldn’t possibly do it all on my own so I now have a small but mighty team of assistant designers that help me out when needed.

What lead you to become a wedding florist?

I’ve always been a creative. Music and art were my ‘things’ in school. I’d picked up flowers as a bit of a hobby when I was freshly out of high school while I was studying my music degree. After creating flowers for a few friend’s weddings, I realised how much I loved it and that just maybe I could make a living out of it! I quickly decided to change my career plans and started Gwen Floral Co the following year.

What’s trending in wedding floristry right now?

The sophisticated luxe and lush floral theme is definitely in! Dried flowers are also a hit. We are definitely seeing trends move away from rustic more of a chic look. Brides are opting for quite lush floral-heavy designs with quite minimal greenery and incorporating interesting dried textures. I’m here for it! Buuut I’m also a lover of all things romantic and whimsical, so I do love creating luxurious garden-inspired designs too.

What’s something you live for?

I’ve watched the FRIENDS series at least seven times. It’s kind of embarrassing. My husband and I have it on repeat; it’s our go-to show when we want to watch something that doesn’t involve thinking! I’m also a dog mum to two labradoodles. If you like FRIENDS or dogs, then there’s a very good chance we will get along really well.

You have a completely free day to hang out on the Sunshine Coast. Get out about! Where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with?

We recently moved to North Brisbane (I’m thankful that it’s NORTH Brisbane so driving to the Sunshine Coast is only an hour drive). I love the beach, but Montville and Maleny have always had my heart. You’ll probably find me wandering Montville with my husband or girl friends, indulging in a delicious fancy lunch.

Take me through your process of your on-the-day job.

The funny things with wedding floral design is that 80% of the work is done before the wedding day! It of course all starts at the initial enquiry when we begin unpacking the client’s vision. After months and months of planning and preparation, the real action starts two to four days before the wedding day. Early market trips, hours of flower prep, making the bouquets, buttonholes, centrepieces & all the rest (not to mention the relentless amount of cleaning and bucket-scrubbing!)

On the day, we typically start off early in the morning by tying off the bouquets and getting everything safely packaged up and loading the vehicle for delivery. We usually deliver the bridal party flowers on the way to the venue/s before arriving at the venue and getting everything unloaded. Depending on various logistics we’ll typically design the arbour and ceremony space first before setting up the reception florals and any other decor we are providing.

Often we are required to stay close by during the ceremony so that we can transfer the ceremony florals to the reception space. After that, we get the last few things back in the vehicle, drive home, usually pour a sneaky glass of wine and rest after a BIG week!

What makes Gwen Floral Co. stand out from the crowd?

Our clients are so much more than a number or ‘just another booking’. I deeply care about my client’s individual vision for their day and will bend over backwards to ensure that vision is brought to life. I also love building more of a personal connection with them so they feel valued and cared for throughout the process, as I know how emotional and overwhelming wedding planning can be.

What do your happy clients always say after having worked with you?

My favourite one it “you exceeded my expectations”! I also often get comments about how smooth and easy they found the planning process – that makes my heart smile!

22 Boho Bouquets

If you thought boho was going anywhere, you’d be surely wrong. Really… how very dare you! The very thought! Bohemian brides and grooms will be gracing our gorgeous wedding industry for some time to come, so strap yourself in for some seriously stunning boho inspo of the bouquet variety.

What makes a bouquet a boho bouquet?

First of all, say that five times fast and we’ll talk. Okay, now that’s out of the way, the second thing is that a boho bouquet should be a little bit eclectic. Combining a variety of elements works – flowers both seasonal and dried, as well as luxe imported blooms. To add texture and abundance, a boho bouquet might include the use of berries or seed pods and ample foliage.

Contrary to popular belief, the boho bouquet does not necessarily have to include native flowers, but if you were to include natives, the stand-out bloom would have to be the King Protea.

Bohemian style consistency

If you’re having a boho bouquet, chances are you’re hankering for a whole bohemian wedding style. It’s the consitution, it’s Mabo, It’s the vibe… that’s it, it’s the vibe – bring the whole look together by finishing off the bouquet with silk ribbons or even some macrame. I rest my case.

Boho beauty + fashion

From your dress to your hair and makeup, your entire look from head to toe should play a part in bringing a bohemian vibe to your wedding fashion and beauty. Your hair could be wild and free with tousled waves, or even pull in the boho feels with some loose, creative braids.

Styled Shoot | A Forgotten Forest

Drawing inspiration from the natural surroundings, a creative team of local Sunshine Coast wedding vendors we are in complete awe of dreamt up this Forgotten Forest wedding inspiration shoot.

Sunshine Coast Florist, Nat Evans, of Heavenly Blooms, Photographer Bonnie Jenkins and styling duo Boho Sisters formed a team drawn to the same aesthetics and work efforts with a sense of adventure in wedding style creativity. The team set out to create something truly unique, amplifying the beauty of nature in an abundance of lush green forestry.

Bonnie says, “We wanted this boho luxe shoot to celebrate both nature and the fun of a brides squad. Seeing all of our different elements and vision come together was a buzz.”

Taking earthy textures and tones, with a nod to the changing of seasons, the team infused a touch of decadence in draping wild bouquets and a circular arbour, adding pops of colour and bringing more life to uplift the forest floor, littered with browning leaves.

Meet Nat Evans | Sunshine Coast Wedding Florist

Here at The Bride’s Tree HQ there is zero chance we could conjure up any more love for Sunshine Coast wedding florist, Nat Evans, business owner and florist at Heavenly Blooms. We already love her to the brim.

We caught up with Nat to get the goss on being flown to New York City to create wedding flowers, how her brides become like family, and the way her flowers are spreading hope and loveliness across the Sunshine Coast to those who need it most.

Nat, tell us about how you repurpose flowers from weddings where the couple don’t have any further use for them.

I have started recently repurposing wedding from my brides and grooms. These are often couples from interstate or those going directly on their honeymoons so they can’t keep their wedding flowers, or maybe they have a cause close to heart. In these cases I will take their flowers to others to appreciate them.

I was inspired by Repeat Roses, an organisation in the U.S. doing this on a huge scale. It means that charities, hospitals, nursing homes receive fresh flowers and they are enjoyed for weeks after the wedding. It’s so lovely and beautiful.

Who are the people that receive the flowers?

I have developed partnerships with a few local businesses, such as Meals on Wheels, nursing homes, care facilities for people with mental illnesses; and it’s proven to be really effective. The flowers are even used in therapy sessions.

I am now about to launch a program for troubled teens with an organisation teaching them life skills. I’m going to be teaching them to arrange a bunch of flowers to brighten up their home.

What are their reactions like when they see you coming in with your beautiful flowers?

It makes people cry mostly – that’s one of the most common reactions. Happy tears. It always makes me cry, I get quite emotional. You can’t even imagine how it makes people feel, it really brightens their day and affects them so much.

Have you found brides are really responsive to this concept?

Yes, very much so. I would say probably 80% of my brides are taking me up on the offer. Brides even seem to be quite clued up with repurposing their flowers from ceremony to reception, which I was quite surprised by. They are then really happy for them to be repurposed a third time.

Have any of them wanted to be involved in the process themselves?

Yes. I had one bride whose sister had suicided. She came and helped me rearrange the flowers and came to the hospital with me the day after her wedding to hand them over to the mental health ward. She said it was one of the best parts of her wedding.

Couples are excited to be part of it. They tend to want to have large say in where their flowers go. Last weekend’s bride took all her flowers on to her grandfather’s grave.

For me it’s really great to see them after and hear all about the best parts of their wedding day. As a florist, you don’t usually get to talk to them so soon after the wedding, so it was really nice.

Why do you think flowers touch people’s hearts so much?

I just think everybody has a flower than invoke’s a memory, especially in nursing homes. The older generation really understand the importance of flowers in the home and have a close connection with flowers as women.

The women in the nursing homes will tell you about their flower memories – it’s a sensory thing, a particular flower makes them think about a specific time in their life.

My grandmother always picked flowers for her table. We’d come in for lunch and there Something from garden to make the house look nice.

That isn’t so common anymore. We lost along the way, but it’s coming back through in the younger generation again now. Fresh flowers bring life to a home, they are so homely, and lots of younger women are getting into this with wild bunches of flowers now, having them in their homes.

Fresh flowers are so important. They make people feel hopeful and happy; flowers cheer people up.

Being around so many beautiful blooms in your shop in Eumundi must be a dream! What’s it like?

I feel really lucky I get to work with such beautiful things all day every day. There is not a day I don’t feel lucky to be a florist and I don’t take it for granted. I’m like a kid in a candy shop. I thought it might have subsided after 26 years, but it hasn’t. I’m lucky, really lucky.

What’s the best part of being involved in someone’s wedding day?

There’s lots of amazing parts. My first fave is meeting brides. I have to send emails, and I do it, but I love meeting my brides in person. I always spend way too long talking to them, getting to know them and being part of the excitement. I love feeling excited with them. I’m addicted to that feeling.

Second fave part is arriving on the day to the bride and being able to hand over the bouquet we spent so long dreaming up together. Pretty much every time we have a squeal and I have a tear. I always cry!

There’s not many jobs in the world where you get to be part of somoneone’s most important day. It’s pretty amazing. You tend to become part of the family and end up doing the sister or brother’s wedding as well. Then I get to see them again and meet the new baby or see pictures of the house they just bought. I love that.

What’s a memorable bride reaction to receiving the bouquet you can recall?

Oh, I have a great one. A couple of years ago I had a bride, who was just mad about flowers. She had been to every workshop I’d ever held. She calls me whenever she comes back to town and gets me to make her a flower crown just because.

So when I turned up on her wedding day after sending her a text that I was one my way. By the time I got there she was out on driveway, running to meet me at the van. She ripped open the door and jumped in to smell flowers. She was just squealing!

After the wedding she slept in the flower crown. She continued to wear it the following day and was sending me texts with her selfies wearing it on their road trip to their honeymoon! She even sent one on the plane!

What has been a surprising part of the job?

How much I love it. I always had a shop or have been working in flower shop. I also did a lot of corporate work. Normally I didn’t love doing wedding flowers when I was working in a shop. I started doing weddings purely by accident from working the markets and after a series of events.

10 years ago if you had told me I’d become a wedding florist I would have laughed. My idea of weddings was dealing with white rose bouquets and bridezillas, but I think we’ve been fortunate as the industry has taken a turn.

Now I get to work with an open-ended palette. Sometimes I’ll be working and I have to pinch myself when I’m arranging a chandelier dripping with flowers. There is so much scope for imagination in wedding florals now.

Tell us about how you ended up working on a wedding in New York?

It’s like a dream. I just landed in right place at right time. I met this crazy amazing girl, who had faith in my ability to hop on plane and make flowers in a place I hadn’t before.

We met through a friend at Christmas last year, and we got to talking and hit it off. After we met a second time at a dinner, she invited me to New York to do her wedding flowers.

The next day I text her saying, “Now that you don’t have four ciders under your belt, are you sure you want me to do your wedding flowers?” She replied saying, ” Yes, I’m dead serious. I love the way you make flowers, I haven’t seen anything like it.”

From there, it’s been so easy. We’ve had a few conversations, but she trusts me to create something amazing. It was funny, I put together a mood board, and she couldn’t believe it – the Pinterest board she already created was almost identical.

How are you going to approach creating flowers in a place you’ve never been to before?

It helps that the bride is really laid back, she’s hired a van to collect flowers from market and I will go straight from the plane to the flower market when I land. I’ll shop till I drop, take it all back to our apartment and start making flowers immediately. My son is coming along to be my assistant!

I buy what’s beautiful on the day. I don’t believe in pre-organised blooms down to every flower. Crazy to some, but I touch and choose most beautiful on the day.

This is the kind of thing that drives me. I love the element of the unknown. I live for this – bring it on, baby.

There is creativity and then there is Woods & Bloom. In my opinion, the Sunshine Coast wedding florist lives on another plane of creative genius. Catherine Shipton is the woman behind these fantastical floral creations. For the truly individualistic bride, the common floral crown simply will not do. Not when she can make a splash with a piece of floral art atop her pretty head.

Even if you’re not the kind of bride, who would throw caution to the wind and don her own little secret garden on her noggin’, you can’t help but admire this spectacular feat in floristry by Woods & Bloom.

I will assume there was a unanimous show of hands, because who wouldn’t want to gaze upon this spring-inspired bridal shoot, featuring Springtime wedding flowers in a pastel colour palette of purples – lavenders, mauves, and a pop of vibrant violet. Outstanding.

A team of talented Sunshine Coast wedding vendors conceived this positively toothsome wedding styling inspiration shoot, which took place in the Sunshine Coast hinterland towns of Maleny and Montville at a bridal suite and chapel respectively.
