Niki Taylor has been running her wedding hair styling business, Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair, for 13 years now. Looking after brides on their wedding day is something she absolutely loves doing, and takes a huge amount of pride in.

As a Sunshine Coast wedding hair stylist, Niki has specialised in wedding styling since kicking off her business, but before this she worked in a creative hairdressing and styling team where Runway and Education events were the focus, which saw her gaining all the necessary creative skills and drive to start her own business.

Niki is a longtime Sunshine Coast local, mother of two and wife, who is bossing it in her field, setting the standard for wedding hair goals. I caught up with Niki to find out more about her life as a Sunshine Coast wedding hair stylist.

Niki, take us through a typical wedding day for you as a wedding hair stylist.

5am – I wake early everyday and I make the coffee. Then I like to check my emails because I cant concentrate until I know I’m on top of everything!

6am – hair and make up, dressed and ready to get out the door

7:30- 8am – Most weddings will be starting around this time slot. I always like to look after the bridesmaids first, so that they are available to look after anything the bride needs in the final times pre-wedding

11am – Mothers and Mothers in Law

12pm The Bride’s turn! By now we are a 3 hours out from ceremony time. I like to style the bride last, so she is all fresh for the photographer’s arrival and can now just relax, know all that needs to be done is done, and put on her dress!

I love to talk to my bride about how she met her husband-to-be, and her honeymoon location. I always feel my brides are relaxed during their time with me chatting about their love.

1pm – We put in the veil and our bride is complete! I usually stay around for a little while and make sure my bride is calm, and if I can help do anything. ( I always like to take a few sneaky pictures, too!)

3-4pm home for more emails and repack my kit for the next day’s weddings!

After 5pm I do try to finish up and focus on family for the evening.

What’s trending in Sunshine Coast weddings at the moment?

There are a lot of elopements this year and next – more than ever before here on the coast! I think we will continue to see hairstyling be effortlessly beautiful. Hair knots and chignons are always classic with ponytails being a real flavour for 2020 and 2021.

What is one unique service or offering or element that makes your business stand out from the crowd?

I think my hairstyling is modern + relaxed and is quite distinctive if it was in a line up. I really lean into a more editorial bridal hair vibe for my clients! Also I am exclusive and only ever look after one wedding on each date, most of my brides comment on this in their booking forms as a reason they have chosen my service. They love that they get to know me during the months prior and by the wedding day its like we are old friends.

What do your happy clients always say after having worked with you?

My clients do always comment that their hair has lasted all night! A big comment that always comes through is my curls don’t drop out, and my up styling is romantic and soft.

A lot of my brides reviews say how professional I am… and nice! But, to be honest, it really just comes from I truly adore what I do! Every wedding and every bride means the world to me, I always put in 110%.

Prior to working in the wedding industry, what did you do?

Before I worked in the wedding industry, I worked as a stylist and hairdresser for many years for a salon with a creative team that worked in Runway and Educational events. It was a super fun and creative time in my life, and flowed onto creating my own business in the wedding industry so perfectly.

You have a completely free day to hang out on the Sunshine Coast. Get out about! Where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with?

I love summertime at the beach with a great book ,or the latest Vogue, relaxing. I have teenage children, who are either surfing or skating, so for now, while I’m cool enough to, still love to hang with them at every opportunity! Then in my perfect dream day – lunch with a glass of wine in Noosa at one of my fave spots! Finished with sunset swims and a BBQ poolside back at home!

Today she shares all her secrets for creating Marisa’s stunning wedding day hair and makeup look for the day she married her love, Michael.

Let’s hear from Valentina herself…

“When I met Marisa on trial day her desire was an elegant and effortless look to complement her beautiful dress and the style of her wedding.

“She wanted full coverage, but that still would look natural and not cakey. I used my favourite “double foundation” technique; I applied Makeup Atelier Paris for full coverage with a synthetic brush, and then sprayed over the top with a light layer of Elementwo airbrush. This makes the foundation sweat-proof, long-lasting and absolutely radiant.

“I choose warm tones for the eyes to complement Marisa’s beautiful complexion, and used a few Asian makeup application techniques to enhance Marisa’s features.

“As for hair we opted for a soft textured low bun.. that is modern and absolutely elegant , decorated with a sparkling hairpiece!”

Marisa and Michael were married at Maleny Manor , and their perfect day was captured by Luke Middlemiss Photography and Creative Flows Studios.

Sunshine Coast bridal hair stylist extraordinaire, Evalyn Parsons, could most definitely be described as the authority in bridal hair fashion and trends, being the official hair stylist to the models for the It’s My Wedding Expo Fashion Shows.

This weekend Evalyn is embarking upon her sixth show, so we had a chat with the lady behind these incredible folicle creations to get the skinny on upcoming trends, what inspires her and what we can expect this weekend at the Expo.

Evalyn, you have been doing the models’ hair for the It’s My Wedding Expo Fashion Show for a long time now. How did you score this awesome gig?

Yes this is our sixth It’s My Wedding Fashion Show that we are styling hair for and we love it. I scored this gig originally by just approaching (organiser) Dee a lot earlier than the expo and offering my services and at that time it turns out they hadn’t booked in another stylist yet so she accepted almost immediately and the rest is history.

What do you love most about being the official Fashion Show hair stylist?

I love styling hair first and foremost of what I do in my business and so the opportunity to create new looks and styles on gorgeous models that brides will be inspired by or love for their wedding day is just an honour. I truly get excited to create beautiful hair styles and love to see the finished result as the combination of hair, makeup and dress on the catwalk.

What usually inspires you in coming up with the hair styles for the models?

Inspiration comes from a range of areas for me. I am always following current trends through blogs, magazines, fashion shows and also what my brides are asking for. Each style I do, I try to create a look that will flatter the face shape and hair type of the model, suit the look and feel of the gowns I also want to showcase some of the current techniques that we are using for our brides and what we see out in the wedding and fashion world currently.

Do you do all of the hair yourself, or does it take a team to get everyone ready on time?

I have an amazing team of stylists and I usually have several on hand with me to help create all the hair styles and also meet and chat with brides at our expo booth. What I like to do is meet our models, view the dresses and then run through the final styles we are going to go with before any hair styling is started. That way we have a fluid look with our styling and we have everyone ready and looking perfect in time.

What would you say are upcoming trends in bridal hair for 2015?

I see upcoming trends staying with romantic and vintage looks for a little while still but I do see more glamour and volume with the way we finish the styles. Braiding is still popular and also downstyles but again more polished waves and refined looks and less unstructured or messy looks.

Any hints on what we can expect to see in your creations this weekend on the runway?

I have to keep a few surprises under my hat so you all come and check them out! But a hint is that you will see our styling looking bigger and better than ever and even more diversity with the looks we want to showcase. We have extended ourselves with further training with some world class hairstylists and that is influencing our looks and techniques.

Nicole Taylor from Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair is one of our industry greats, who has gone from strength to strength with her wedding hair styling business. From working in a salon full time and doing weddings on the weekend, she now works fulltime in her own business, following her true passion for wedding hair styling. She has even generated a leg of her business that sees her travelling to Bali for weddings. We quizzed Nicole about her glam life as a Sunshine Coast wedding hair stylist.

Niki, how do you keep up with all the wedding hair trends and gain inspiration?

My passion has always been styling hair. I would have bought a VOUGE magazine instead of food when I was training to become a hairdresser! I am constantly keeping an eye on fashion from head-to-toe. Bridal and editorial. I enjoy buying bridal magazines and the resources on the internet are now so good!

As you might know, I’m slightly obsessed with Instagram… I update my business page with my work daily. I find it such a great resource, along with Pinterest and tumbler. Im very visual, so I like these because its all about photographs!

I am currently undergoing training to become a session.stylist with KEVIN.MURPHY to add to my attention-to-detail with brides.This is just a stepping stone from the bridal styling training I’ve done over the years with Toni & Guy, Sharron Blain, Nadine Donovan and Lizzie Liros to also working within very well known hair salons, alongside talented world-traveled stylists, who have taught me so much.

Is the gig as glamorous as it seems?

Glamorous…Yes! I love making another person feel lovely! I’ve always been like that. I love what I do and I am driven to make my clients feel and look amazing from the minute i meet them. I pride myself on providing exactly what my bride wants and what will suit them.

On your wedding day your Hair and Make up team should be calming and helpful. They should make you have a giggle and help you feel like a more beautiful you in the behind the scenes of your wedding morning!

Do you ever rope family and friends in to trial new hairstyles on?

Definitely! Ive always been the “hairdresser friend” that runs around doing all my girlfriends’ hair before we head out for a wine or an event. But I’d have to say my 10-year-old daughter gets the best morning styling before school! She actually asked for GHD curls for her grade four photos last year. I really do enjoy my job, I enjoy all aspects of styling, especially bridal hair. My favourite would have to be a bohemian wave. I think my clients seek me out for this quite a lot on the Sunshine Coast!

What makes being a wedding hair stylist so different from being a hairdresser?

A wedding hair stylist is not about your colour or cut. It’s about pinning, blowdrying, shaping and creation of hair into as chosen style. Whether it be a bespoke up style, classic blow dry or a boho wave. These methods could be used on weddings, photo shoots, models or runway. This is an aspect of hairdressing that requires a ‘hair stylist’ to be able to create any look on the spot using her tools. To know hair in a different form. It’s gorgeous, it’s glossy and it’s incredibility perfect. It’s wedding hair! Each bridal hair stylist will have their own signature style… Always choose a professional on such a special day.

How do you choose the products you use?

My studio stocks a full range of KEVIN.MURPHY products. A little birdie told us you have done some travel for weddings recently?

Do you have more plans for working on Bali weddings?

Yes! I’ve started advertising with a bridal company in Bali. My family go to Indonesia quite regularly surfing, so mixing business with pleasure, seeing where that takes me… but of course the Sunshine Coast is my home and my primary place of business. I live at Moffat Beach and to be honest I believe it’s paradise!

If you could travel anywhere else in the world for wedding hairstyling work, where would it be?

I just finished a quote today for a wedding coming up in Hawaii, so im pretty excited to hear back about that special wedding!

Elisse and Khesanh from The Beauty Case specialise in vintage and retro-style hair and makeup, as it’s a passion of theirs to provide fellow period-style enthusiasts with a specialised service. From victory rolls to pin curls, from red lips and rosy cheeks to winged liner and luscious lashes, these girls have it all covered. Love their style!

What do you love about vintage and retro styling?

We love that vintage and retro styling showcases femininity! It is glamourous, elegant, romantic and fun. We are so happy it is being embraced by so many of our brides! We do everything from authentic vintage styling to vintage with a modern twist.

Does the 50’s glam hair and makeup look suit everybody?

Every woman experiences such joy when they have been given a style they wouldn’t usually choose for themselves! We pride ourselves on working with our clients to help choose a vintage style that will really showcase their features.

Do you have to have a certain length of hair to pull off this look?

Depending on what style is chosen will determine whether you have the right hair length.
Typically women in the 40’s and 50’s had their hair cut into a ‘middy’, which was perfect for a traditional pin curl set. These days this style of cut is not as common, which is why we help our clients choose the best look suited to their current style.

Who is your fave icon of time gone by to look to for style?

Most people refer to Marilyn Monroe as a significant figure of the 1950’s, which she certainly was! But for me, my style icons of the 30’s – 50’s are Grace Kelly, Jean Harlow, Susan Hayward, Sophia Loren, Elizabeth Taylor and Doris Day.

Where do you draw your biggest inspiration?

My biggest inspiration comes from the photos of our grandparents and women and men of that generation. The styles we re-create were invented by women with next to nothing, yet they always put their best foot forward! To go back in time where women dressed up for the cinema would be a dream!

What’s your fave variation of vintage styles for hair and makeup?

You can’t go wrong with a fresh, brushed out pin curl set, dewy skin, winged eyeliner and luscious lips! This is my most favourite combination that just screams glamour!
