Emma Homewood is well-known as one of the best-dressed Sunshine Coast marriage celebrants, but more than that she is a caring, approachable, meticulously prepared and professional celebrant. 

Prior to becoming a marriage celebrant, she filled the role of wedding coordinator for Spicers Clovelly, one of the Sunshine Coast hinterland’s most popular and luxury wedding venues. This could not have prepared Emma for her future career better as she had the opportunity to witness literally hundreds of ceremonies, taking note of everything that worked – or didn’t – and style her ceremonies to fill a gap in the local Sunshine Coast wedding market.

Emma, as a Sunshine Coast marriage celebrant, what does a typical wedding day look like for you?

First thing – I read the ceremony script out loud from start to finish at home the way in which I want to deliver it. I like to make sure my couple’s story is fresh in my mind and make any necessary tweaks.

Next, I double check that my microphones and iPad are fully charged and ready to go, and that all necessary documents, certificates and vows are correct before packing the car.

When it comes to choosing what to wear to the wedding, I will have already asked the couple to give me details about the wedding colour palette. I choose what to wear based on the wedding style, floral concepts, and bearing in mind what the bridal party are wearing as well as the location/surrounds. And I always take along a back up outfit just incase!

Upon arrival, I always visit the party who will be making the entrance (in most cases this is the bride) to see how they’re feeling, calm the nerves, give them a read through of their vows and give all involved any last minute tips and let them know what to expect.

Finally, it’s time to make my way to ceremony location to set up certificates and PA, do a sound check and put on background music if required. If there’s a musician, I run them through their cues for ceremony. I also check in with photographer, videographer, and onsite coordinator if there is one, to go over any details they (or I) may need.

I catch up with the party onsite (in most cases this is the groom and his wedding party) and run them through any details they need to know, and calm any nerves. I also check in with anyone else included in the ceremony, such as ring bearers. If there are little kids or animals (such as your dog) I will familiarise myself with them so they know I’m approachable.

Before the magic happens, I welcome the guests, introduce myself to parents and any other significant people I have noted, and let them know where to sit.

Then it’s ceremony time!

Following the ceremony, I congratulate the couple! I usually like to get a photo of us together before saying my goodbyes and leaving them to have an incredible night!

Something people always ask me is…

Every time I tell people I work in the wedding industry, they ask if I get all the ‘Bridezillia’s’… I tell them no, I do NOT. This is simply a derogatory term, made up for those who don’t understand how emotionally complex it can be planning what is likely to be the biggest and most expensive day of your life.

Have I had tears in meetings and on wedding days, yes I have. But in all honesty, when this has happened, from my perspective it has always been justified, and I’ve never really considered it to be unreasonable.

What’s happening in your specific area of weddings this year?

There seems to be a growing demand with couples looking to engage a professional MC which can really make the whole day feel seamless, and also take the stress off Uncle Larry!

What do your happy clients always say after having worked with you?

The biggest compliment I can receive is when a guest assumed I have known the couple for years, when typically we have only met once. The best compliments I receive from my couples are that I made them feel relaxed and confident on the day. By knowing they were in safe hands and helping them with their vows, that both them and their guests loved how engaging and entertaining the ceremony was, and they felt it all flowed seamlessly without them having to think about too much.

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

I grow up in the highlands of New Guinea, in a town called Mt Hagen. My parents ran luxury resorts. We had many travelling sales people stay at the resort, and amongst them were diamond and gem dealers. My father was always buying and selling diamonds he sourced from remote areas of New Guinea. Dad would take me on many of these missions to find sellers of gold and diamonds within the surrounding villagers. I’m sure that is were my love of diamonds and jewellery has stemmed from.

Tell us about your business in this wonderful industry we call wedding…

My business has grown exponentially over the last 10 years! I think I have been partnered with The Bride’s Tree for 8 years?! I have married many hundreds of couples at countless varied locations ranging from weddings with over 150 guests to just the couple and their two witnesses, and everything in-between! To date, I have over 342 five star Google reviews.

In our first months after launching The Bride’s Tree back in 2011-12, we organised our very first magazine shoots working with Nicole and the styling team from Splash Events. After a ton of careful planning, the day came for our bright, summer-inspired beach shoot… and the weather was cyclonic. 

At Shelly Beach in Caloundra, we huddled in the back of a truck Nicole Hopkins had packed full of furniture and styling items for our boho-themed shoot. As the rain poured and we stared out at the ominous dark clouds rolled in fast over the ocean horizon. 

Just as we were starting to feel the realisation setting in that we may have to pack it in, Nicole looked at us and said, “Okay, we’re doing this. Let’s get it all ready in here and when there’s a break we grab and run.” 

And we did. 

To this day, it’s still one of my favourite shoot experiences and taught us that no matter what, the show must go on, and when you’re working with ultimate pros like Nicole and her team, it always will. 

Read on to learn more about Nicole’s journey as a wedding stylist who, over the past 15 years has built up her business from a one man show to the Sunshine Coast’s largest wedding and events company. 

Nicole, what does a day in the life of a wedding stylist look like?

My job is incredibly busy and every day is different! I could be meeting with clients, preparing mood boards and proposals – I do love this creative part!

At the same time I’m also preparing for the events that lie ahead, organising suppliers, floor plans, managing the stock selection with the warehouse team, rostering the staff and creating the event schedule which is often minute by minute. Then the action part, where I am very hands on setting up events and you’ll often find my up a ladder and carrying chairs and furniture.

This is hard work, but also one of my favourite parts of the process. It is so exciting seeing a concept come to life and to witness the delight of the client when they finally see what they had dreamed.

Whenever I get time, I’m also always researching new trends and finding inspiration and buying way too much new decor!

Prior to working in the wedding industry, what did you do?

I have always felt drawn to everything and anything creative. After School I started working at the local then ‘Grace Bros’ (now Myer) in the Manchester department with two very strict and hardworking bosses, they soon taught me what working hard and customer service is all about.

I found myself making that department look the best it had ever looked (I was told), making beds, folding towels perfectly and colour coordinating all the linen and displays. It wasn’t long and I was picked up by the Visual Merchandising team and over 9 years worked my way up to assistant manager in one of Sydney’s largest stores and was then selected in an elite traveling team merchandising refurbished and new stores ready for launches and grand openings.

Over those years I studied interior design and decorating at night and completed a Bachelor in Design.

What is one unique thing that makes your business stand out from the crowd?

Share something that’s interesting about you, or something a lot of people don’t realise.

While I’m known as a creative workaholic, it wasn’t all work and no play. I’ve done a lot a travel and spent six years travelling around Australia in a kombi – then ventured overseas for a world trip – surfing and snowboarding around the world. Travel has certainly been a major influence in my work and design style.

How do you like to spend your days off?

My free days are spent with my children and friends relaxing on our beautiful beaches with a bottle of wine, a picnic set up and a grazing platter… followed by a night out in Noosa with dinner and dancing!

 

What can we expect to see in weddings this year?

2022 is shaping up to be an incredible year for weddings and events on the Sunshine Coast. Due to restricted international travel and the natural beauty this region offers, Noosa, the Hinterland and the Sunshine Coast will continue to grow as key wedding destinations.

Our planning department is expanding to assist interstate brides and grooms in creating their dream wedding. Predicted trends… like in 2021, 2022 will still see smaller more intimate weddings and luxurious private dining experiences.

Niki Taylor has been running her wedding hair styling business, Sass & Niki’s Wedding Hair,  for 14 years now. Looking after brides on their wedding day is something she absolutely loves doing, and takes a huge amount of pride in.

As a Sunshine Coast wedding hair stylist, Niki has specialised in wedding styling since kicking off her business, but before this she worked in a creative hairdressing and styling team where Runway and Education events were the focus, which saw her gaining all the necessary creative skills and drive to start her own business.

Niki is a longtime Sunshine Coast local, mother of two and wife, who is bossing it in her field, setting the standard for wedding hair goals. I caught up with Niki to find out more about her life as a Sunshine Coast wedding hair stylist. 

 

Niki, take us through a typical wedding day for you as a wedding hair stylist.

5am – I wake early everyday and I make the coffee. Then I like to check my emails because I cant concentrate until I know I’m on top of everything!

6am – hair and make up, dressed and ready to get out the door

7:30- 8am – Most weddings will be starting around this time slot. I always like to look after the bridesmaids first, so that they are available to look after anything the bride needs in the final times pre-wedding

11am – Mothers and Mothers in Law

12pm The Bride’s turn! By now we are a 3 hours out from ceremony time. I like to style the bride last, so she is all fresh for the photographer’s arrival and can now just relax, know all that needs to be done is done, and put on her dress!

I love to talk to my bride about how she met her husband-to-be, and her honeymoon location. I always feel my brides are relaxed during their time with me chatting about their love.

1pm – We put in the veil and our bride is complete! I usually stay around for a little while and make sure my bride is calm, and if I can help do anything. ( I always like to take a few sneaky pictures, too!)

3-4pm home for more emails and repack my kit for the next day’s weddings!

After 5pm I do try to finish up and focus on family for the evening.

 What’s trending in Sunshine Coast weddings at the moment?

There are a lot of elopements this year and next – more than ever before here on the coast! I think we will continue to see hairstyling be effortlessly beautiful. Hair knots and chignons are always classic with ponytails being a real flavour for 2020 and 2021.

What is one unique service or offering or element that makes your business stand out from the crowd?

I think my hairstyling is modern + relaxed and is quite distinctive if it was in a line up. I really lean into a more editorial bridal hair vibe for my clients! Also I am exclusive and only ever look after one wedding on each date, most of my brides comment on this in their booking forms as a reason they have chosen my service. They love that they get to know me during the months prior and by the wedding day its like we are old friends.

What do your happy clients always say after having worked with you?

My clients do always comment that their hair has lasted all night! A big comment that always comes through is my curls don’t drop out, and my up styling is romantic and soft.

A lot of my brides reviews say how professional I am… and nice! But, to be honest, it really just comes from I truly adore what I do! Every wedding and every bride means the world to me, I always put in 110%.

Prior to working in the wedding industry, what did you do?

Before I worked in the wedding industry, I worked as a stylist and hairdresser for many years for a salon with a creative team that worked in Runway and Educational events. It was a super fun and creative time in my life, and flowed onto creating my own business in the wedding industry so perfectly.

You have a completely free day to hang out on the Sunshine Coast. Get out about! Where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with?

I love summertime at the beach with a great book ,or the latest Vogue, relaxing. I have teenage children, who are either surfing or skating, so for now, while I’m cool enough to, still love to hang with them at every opportunity! Then in my perfect dream day – lunch with a glass of wine in Noosa at one of my fave spots! Finished with sunset swims and a BBQ poolside back at home!

When I first met Adam Johnson, I immediately knew this man is someone pretty special. Instantly warm and friendly, he’s the kind of guy you smile around, because you just can’t help it. 

I asked Adam to answer some questions for this here A-list Vendor profile, knowing I wanted you all to meet him, too. However, I was unprepared for what I was about to learn. 

From Adam’s favourite way to spend his day – starting with letting the chooks out at 5am and ending with wine time with his wife, who he routinely refers to as “Beautiful Liz” (awww!) to his experience in the Australian wine industry hosting events and VIPs, this guy is even more impressive than I realised! Yet – and this is key – so very down-to-earth and humble. 

Prior to working in the wedding industry, what did you do and how did it prepare you for being a wedding celebrant?

I started in the wine industry when I was 15 at a Cellar Door in a little town called Mudgee in NSW. Back then, I was entertaining groups as they came to visit and the priority was to ensure they fell in love the place. I have been entrenched within this industry for 30+ years and have first hand information about all aspects of the Australian Wine Industry.

From there, I have travelled around the country to host and entertain all kinds of groups and people; including 160,000 people at Beef Australia, working along side of Chefs such as Curtis Stone, Iron Chef Japan entertaining Governor Generals, and even hosting for our own Prime Minister.

Over time, this builds an elevated level of self confidence, which I’d like to believe is teamed up with some form of professionalism to deliver amazing outcomes; even in the most challenging circumstances.

What do your happy clients always say after having worked with you?

The humbling bit…

The vast majority of those I marry become good friends. I watch their family’s grow, support them in times of need, celebrate their successes and even represent their families again when its time to say goodbye to a loved one.

But every year, year after year; on the 3rd of July, so many of them come to say “Happy Birthday Adam”! I like to think they say this, because I got it just so right for them; and they are still thankful. I think that’s pretty cool actually. Way cool!

Take me through your process of your on-the-day job.

I think a Celebrant and a Chef have very similar rolls, in that it’s all about the preparation. Prep, prep and more prep. The gifts have been sent, equipment at its best, you already know ‘who is who in the zoo’, plans and strategies are in place, Plan B and C have been considered, legals complete, Zoom instructions clear, clothing matched to the backdrop (so I blend in; rather than stand out) and contact made with key people. Then it’s show time!

You have a completely free day to hang out on the Sunshine Coast. Get out about! Where are you going, what are you doing and who are you with?

Generally speaking, this is Sunday, and it starts once I let the chooks out, around 5:00am, then it’s off to the markets to pick up ingredients for breakfast with the family.

Following that, it’s time for Sir Reginald Wrinklebottom (the rescue pooch) to head down to the beach for a swim, before heading off for family lunch at anyone of the Coasts eateries. It’s great family time, without devices and just kicking back; enjoying each other’s company.

The afternoon is spent in the vege patch; cleaning, picking and chasing the chooks out and then my wife, Beautiful Liz, and I sit on the back deck with a glass of wine and watch the sunset. That’s what I care for.

Share something that’s interesting about you, or something a lot of people don’t realise.

To a large extent; I brought myself up. I buried my Father when I was 13 and then my Mother 5 years later. I inherited a farm that I didn’t want nor care for and had to make some pretty big decisions early on.

I didn’t know where I was going to live or what I was going to do. But I wanted better for my girlfriend at the time and our 1 year old daughter. So, I jumped into the car and drove until I exhausted my fuel funds. I ended up in a place called Maroochydore, Sunshine Coast Queensland.

From there I ‘juggled’ a job, sent for my family and now 25 years later Grace (now 24), Jack (19), Oscar (11) and Beautiful Liz (my girlfriend at the time; age not disclosed) feel incredibly blessed.

Somewhat afraid that something similar may happen to my kids one day, I created a document referred to as ‘The Johnson Boys Code of Conduct’ which is a set of standards for them to be guided by; that ended up going around the world.

What’s happening in Sunshine Coast weddings in 2021?

There is fresh paint, new areas and menus designed, and it’s like they are all new again; but have still managed to retained the soul that makes them feel so warm and special.

In regards to predicted trends, it the use of technology to connect the world. And I predict that this will become the new norm. So set yourself in for a day of theatrical brilliance and magic that we never previously comprehended. And that’s kinda cool too I think.
