They trekked to the top of Mt. Tinbeerwah, to profess their love on the spectacular mountaintop aspect of the Gubbi Gubbi people. As far as elopements shoots go, this one was pretty perfect.

Tayla and Dean were relaxed with a cute boho style. Photographer, Terri Hanlon, organised their elopement shoot adventure and captured their beautiful love story.

“Hayden was head over heels and thought from the very first moment he saw Rachael, wow who is this girl; I need her in my life – but had to contain his excitement until the timing was just right!

“Hayden and Rachael’s elopement ceremony was a moment to press pause and remember how far they had come together and to exchange promises to each other in an intimate way, whilst the world around them was full of so many unknowns at the time.

“We gathered not only to celebrate the couple joining together, but also the coming together of their family as they took the step forward together as one, in front of our team and Rachael’s Mother, Father and Brother.

Inspired by the bold and moody terrain of Emu Mountain, Ella and Callum ventured to the top with their elopement crew to capture these incredible shots.

Being a florist herself, Ella designed her own bouquet and arrangements for the photo shoot. The florist-come-model of Yukari Botanicals carefully selected abundant roses, opening them up to create an impactful splash of colour in the otherwise monochromatic shoot.

Atop the mountain, Official Gian Music set the scene with a simple acoustic serenade, and Naturally Jek Photography captured all the magic as it unfolded.

Lisa, describe how the day of your elopement went.

We cooked a bbq lunch at home with my sisters and cracked a bottle of champagne. I then left to get ready at my friend’s house and my hair and makeup lady came there.

Dan and the kids got ready together at home with my two sisters. It was nice for them to be a part of the day even though they weren’t coming to the elopement. My friend drove me there, and we had a simple ceremony that the rain was kind enough to hold off for!

It then rained on and off, and we got lots of photos and popped some champagne. Once it was all done, we picked up take away Thai on the way home and didn’t even see the New Year in!

What was something important to you that you simply had to include?

I wasn’t phased about anything being an absolute necessity. I wanted it to be as simple as possible with no fuss. It was important to me that everyone there was chill and casual about everything. I was so lucky to have a photographer and celebrant I already knew, and my videographer was recommended and so easygoing as well!

Share a special moment from the day.

Our son read a beautiful poem he wrote with my sister during the ceremony and it was really nice. I also loved watching the kids play in the rain on the rocks during photos. I felt so grateful to have such a beautiful family.

Did you have a honeymoon?

No honeymoon! Lots of people asked if we would do a honeymoon, but when you have a beautiful family and live at the Sunshine Coast, I always say, “my life is a holiday!”

Who did you invite to be part of your day?

My friend Rose, who I met when I first moved to the coast. I have a lot of friends, so it was hard to not involve them all, but we decided one person each! Dan’s mum, Lucy, was also there. We didn’t tell her until the day before!

Was it a hard decision?

Initially it did feel hard and a bit stressful! However once the decision was made (we moved our big celebration at Aquila Retreat till next October) I focused on creating a really magical day this year and was really relaxing and all about us. Funnily enough we now feel like we have the best of both worlds!

Tell us about what you did on the day.

The boys went out for breakfast while the girls got started on hair and makeup at our unit. I had my favourite music on, and did up some platters for us, and the whole morning was super chilled – we actually were running ahead of time!

We had our first look photos there, then headed to the ceremony together. It was the most stunning day with blue sky and wispy clouds, and when we were standing at the altar I couldn’t get over how stunning our spot was.

We did some sneaky photos together in a little forest path after the ceremony then met our guests at Ross’s parents’ place for the reception. Then it was drinks and canapés, and I took my shoes off straight away!

We had the most incredible 7-course degustation from 6:00, then carried on with drinks in the lounge setting by the pool. It felt so ‘us’ and we both couldn’t get over how perfect the entire day was!

Share a special moment from the day.

We loved getting first look photos at our unit overlooking the ocean! It was so nice to take time out together before the ceremony and get lost in the moment.

Seeing each other beforehand made it feel like the day was just for us and helped settle the nerves – we also loved getting chauffeured to the ceremony together in a gorgeous black Jag convertible.

After a chill morning together with cute gifts in pyjamas that made me wonder, “Why aren’t all wedding day mornings like Christmas with gifts in your PJs?“, they stayed put at their Airbnb for their elopement ceremony.

Since their Airbnb, The Nest and Aviary, backs onto a picturesque Golf Course, the couple were totally relaxed and happy with the change of plans. Nothing a couple of cute clear umbrellas can’t fix!

They may not have ended up with the adventurous mountaintop Sunshine Coast elopement they originally planned, but like all good adventures – you just have to roll with it. Scroll to see how their day turned out in the end.

Our Elopement Announcement to our Families – the morning after

Yesterday by the shores of Lake Baroon, we gathered at three in the afternoon

In the secret garden where people were few, we exchanged the enduring words ‘I do’

With just little Flynn and a handful of mates, standing beside us to celebrate

Sealed with a kiss, to elope we did choose, we’re ready now to announce our big news

We’re thrilled to exclaim that we share the same name, our little trio now sealed with a ‘Cheyne’

And although you were missing we just want to say, you were deep in our thoughts throughout the whole day

Amanda believes it’s important to realise not everyone can get their whole families together stress-free, so breaking the mould is an option worth exploring. Her and her now husband, Steve, chose to have their elopement at Secrets on the Lake in Montville, as the added element of “secret” appealed to the sentiment of the day! Amanda shares her Sunshine Coast elopement experience with us here. 

Deciding to Elope

We “eloped” with just close friends who kept our secret- no family, just close mates. We did things a bit differently, out of necessity. It was a bit difficult when we first set out to do this. There was a bit of hesitation when we told traditional vendors we were doing it this way, and felt like we were breaking the mould of a traditional day. It made us think we should just elope – the two of us and our son. But that made us feel too isolated and we felt we needed some key people from our lives to celebrate with!

When we pushed past that, we realised that there’s no exact formula to a wedding. It can be as customised as you like, and when we pushed all of that aside, we truly felt like our format was incredibly fitting for us and we hand-crafted our dream little tropical event.

Smooth Planning

It was such a wonderful day with thanks to the Sunshine Coast wedding vendors we worked with- and I think it’s worth mentioning how we got on to them all through The Bride’s Tree‘s wonderful content and information. It was such a well-oiled machine (the Sunshine Coast wedding scene), and it was lovely to see everyone working together so beautifully and promoting one another’s services. It was such a positive experience to see each business tagging each other and helping to promote one another. I don’t know many experiences I’ve had in my time where it feels so collaborative of one another in any one industry.

Keeping with Tradition

My beautiful diamond and  earrings (something borrowed, something blue) were loaned from Artisans Bespoke Jewellers, where we had my engagement ring made. They have an awesome offer – if you have your ring made there, they loan you a piece of jewellery for your wedding day. They were aquamarine drops with white gold diamond flower tops.

Special Moments

On behalf of my late Grandad, my friend Bob walked me down the aisle, reading out the last card my Grandad wrote to me before he passed. I carried a photo medallion in my bouquet to represent my Grandad and put the flowers from the bouquet in the ocean on our honeymoon on Fraser Island as a symbolic gesture to him.

To open the ceremony, our friends read out our very first love letter we wrote to each other which made us all giggle. Our friends also read portions of our ceremony instead of our celebrant reading it all – including the asking vows, which felt really personalised.

Unique Touches

We landed on a tropical themed wedding- it was so colourful– ALL of our guests wore Hawaiian shirts and our flower arrangements were so colourful. Steve is known for his Hawaiian shirts!

Our two-year-old son, Flynn, was included in putting his special ‘seal’ on our marriage by helping us lock a personalised padlock onto the fence at the location of the ceremony and throwing the keys into the fishpond.

We had ‘love ladders’ displayed at the ceremony, which we made ourselves, with photos from our lives together and alternating quotes from our letters and cards to each other over the years.

For their wedding, New Zealand couple Sarah and Tom could think of no better way to celebrate than to pack up their families and head for a place that had previously captured their hearts. It was a cosy intimate affair with only 12 guests. They hired decor and lawn games, brought in a caterer and relaxed into the day.

Planning the day itself was as simple as booking a hair stylist and makeup artist for the bride, her sisters and mother, ordering some flowers from a local florist, and booking a photographer. The one crucial element they needed was a celebrant, and that’s where Sarah’s Dad came in, making for one very special ceremony indeed.

Sarah says she wouldn’t change a thing – especially not their destination or small wedding. Of course she was pretty happy with her choice of hubby too, saying, “He is the funniest, kindest person I know… and my best friend so it was a pretty easy decision!”
