A Change of Venue

When we started planning our wedding, we were surprised by how expensive it could be and initially chose the cheapest venue. However, as time went on, those costs climbed and nearly matched our dream venue, which we had originally thought was out of reach. Ultimately, we made the tough decision to cancel our first venue, and it turned out to be one of the best choices we made.

Wedding Planning Priorities

We aimed to create a stress-free day for both ourselves and our guests, choosing a local venue that reflects our personal style. Our vision was to host a fun, lively party filled with the best food and drinks, crafting an unforgettable atmosphere for everyone involved.

My Planning Resources

My wedding planner, Jacqueline from Wild Heart Weddings, helped me with many of the suppliers. For inspiration, I turned to Pinterest, The Bridal Journey, The Wed, and, of course, The Brides Tree.

We always envisioned our wedding in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, making it convenient for us to plan and accessible for our guests, as many of our family and friends live nearby.

Biggest splurge: We chose the wedding venue with our guests in mind. It was essential for us to have both the ceremony and reception in the same location, allowing everyone to relax and fully enjoy the day without the hassle of traveling between two venues. To make things even easier, we also arranged for a bus service so our guests wouldn’t have to worry about driving.

Best money-saving choice: Getting our best mate to do our catering

Pink Bridesmaid Dresses: a 2025 Wedding Trend

Amy’s bridesmaids wore all shades and styles of pink bridesmaid dresses. This is a huge 2025 wedding trend that we absolutely LOVE and this bridal party executed it seamlessly… I mean, presumably they did in fact have seams in their gorgeous dresses, but you get what I mean!

Our Wedding Songs

For the bridal party entrance, we chose ‘My Love Mine All Mine’ by Mitski for my bridesmaids. When I walked down the aisle we played ‘Even When I’m Sleeping’ by Leonardo’s Bride. Our bridal party entrance song was ‘Let’s Dance’ by David Bowie, and for our first dance, we chose ‘Harvest Moon’ by Neil Young.

The Proposal

Ryan and I were at Dolphin Sands, Tasmania, staying at a beautiful Airbnb right on the beach. That evening, we shared wine and a platter overlooking the beautiful mountains of Freycinet. Then Ryan said, ‘Wouldn’t this be the perfect place to ask you to marry me?’ He pulled a ring box from his jacket pocket, and in that moment, time felt like it stopped. It’s still the most incredible feeling I’ve ever experienced.

Emotions on High

The most emotional moment was walking down the aisle, and I was so grateful to have my mum and dad by my side. But seeing Ryan’s face was the most overwhelming feeling I’ve ever experienced. The chapel was filled with so much love, and everyone there could feel the depth of our connection. All I can say is that marrying your person truly is the best thing you will ever do in your life.

The Proposal

“I am a BIG Christmas lover. So, in true Christmas form we were completing our couple advent calendar in 2021 with handwritten activities to complete daily. I was predicting and not so subtly hinting to Trent that we should get engaged in the New Year.

‘When our daily advent calendar task was a home cooked meal under the Christmas tree, I wasn’t surprised when I came home to Trent having had prepared a fancy steak with wine on a picnic rug under the tree. We had a romantic dinner amongst the twinkling lights with our 2 dogs sitting with us. Trent proceeded to reach under the Christmas tree and grab a small ‘gift’. He didn’t even ask me the question, I just said yes.”

Unforgettable Moments

“I was most emotional in the lead up to walking down the aisle. The nerves really hit you when the moment is actually happening, and you are the main event! I didn’t know if I was going to cry, faint or laugh!

“I’ll never forget reading a poem at the start of the ceremony for my sister who couldn’t make our wedding day. I’m so glad I was brave enough to read it because it’s something I will cherish forever.”

Our Noosa River Wedding Venue

“We always knew we would get married on the coast. We grew up near Maleny so wanted to branch away from the Hinterland and go beachy! Noosa Boathouse offered a gorgeous rooftop Sunset Bar which suited our cocktail lunchtime reception.”

Biggest Challenge

“Hastings Street is very hard to park on! The logistics of moving our guests between our ceremony and reception was our biggest challenge. We booked a private Noosa Ferry to transport our guests to our ceremony. Luckily the Ferry was able to depart right from the reception jetty. It was great! That way no one had to struggle to get a park and just enjoy the ride!”

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Our biggest splurge was booking the MV Catalina Noosa for a two-hour sunset cruise after our reception. Being a Winter wedding, we decided to have a lunch time reception, but we still wanted to dance and sip on cocktails! The Catalina was the perfect splurge so we could enjoy the Noosa River with groovy tunes and continue the celebration.

Best money-saving decision: We were still able to have the wedding of our dreams without an outrageous price tag by keeping our guest list low and intimate. We only invited our dearest friends and family.

DIY: I DIYed my wedding shoes by decorating them with pearl beads. I had my eye on a similar pair that were over $300 new, so I decided to make the pearl flower beads myself and stick them onto a more affordable shoe. I also designed our wedding invitations and website! I made sure to still print our invites in Australia and supported a premium paper supplier.

The Cutest Meet-Cute Ever

“Crazily Trent and I met in Grade 3 of Primary School. I was the new girl on the block in a small-town, country school. We started officially dating in Year 10 of High School, but most people would agree that we had eyes for each other since we were 8 years old.

“It was always going to be Trent. He has been my friend since Primary School. He is the calm to my crazy and sees the world through such a simple lens. He is kind, caring and big kid at heart. There was never any doubt that we would get married one day!”

The One Thing We’d Do Differently

“I was so worried about it raining on the day that I didn’t even consider it being really sunny! I would have told our guests to bring sunglasses, or hats for the day because our guests were in the sun during our ceremony and on the cruise.”

Tiana and Taiwo had every intention of simply eloping until a surprise announcement from the Sunshine Coast’s Australia Zoo. As avid animal lovers, the release of Australia Zoo’s wedding packages changed their way of imagining their wedding, elevating the entire concept to take place in a vast Serengeti Safari on the Sunshine Coast. 

Complete with roaming giraffes and rhinoceros, the magical ceremony was followed by a photo shoot with the giraffes and utilising the stunning aspects of the grounds of Australia Zoo.

The Location

Originally we were thinking of eloping, but the moment Australia Zoo announced their wedding packages it was a game changer and we knew we had to splurge more on our wedding destination. It’s not everyone cup of tea but it was definitely ours.

We chose Australia Zoo simply because we are animal lovers. Not only do they have the amazing wildlife but there are also beautiful spots all throughout the zoo that are great backdrops with their luscious gardens.

Biggest Priority

Our highest priority when planning the wedding was to remind ourselves that the wedding was for us. We needed to make it our day and not worry so much about trying to please everyone as its almost impossible. In the end as long as we were happy we could live in the moment.

Greatest Challenge

Trying to prepare an alternative incase it rained. Australia Zoo had other options but our heart was set on the African Savannah, outside where the animals would be behind us. Luckily it only showered on the way to the zoo.

Most Emotional Part of the Day

My father walking me down the aisle, seeing my future husband waiting for me with the perfect background of the African Savannah.

Advice for Future Couples Getting Married

Prepare months in advance so you can live in the moment and enjoy every single second when it arrives because it’ll all be over in the blink of an eye.

Our Love Story

We met at the Brisbane’s Treasury Casino where Tai was working at the time as his part time job whilst studying. I happened to meet Tai there when I went to the casino for dinner with a friend.

We were in Jamaica when Tai proposed. Tai just finished climbing the Dunn’s River Falls and lead us on a walk through their tropical gardens on a small lake bridge.

Our Next Big Adventure

We want to pay our new home off as early as possible. We have just achieved paying for two brand new cars.

Best money-saving decision: We saved money on our guests as we only had our immediate family there. Other than covid restrictions, we were able to keep costs down this way and we actually didn’t have any bridal party. It was all about us.

The Proposal

We had our ring made together, but I didn’t know when it would happen. Nathan planned a very special summer solstice/eclipse sunset proposal by the waterfront with all of my favourite girls, my mum and grandma (and grandad) to be apart of the proposal. He learned and proposed to me in Japanese, as our lives are heavily influenced by Japan.

How We Met

We met when I began my career as a high school teacher at the same school. We clicked instantly and spent a year getting to know each other. Now, all the people who were around us said they could see our chemistry, even before we saw it ourselves. We spent a lot of time laughing and joking around, and built such a strong foundation for a long lasting marriage, without even knowing it!

Why I Married Him

Nathan and I have so much fun with each other, every single day. We can go a whole day sitting on the couch being silly together and it can feel like the best day. We just want to be around each other all the time and support each other through everything, we really are best friends.

Our Top Wedding Priority

One of our main priorities was to make sure that all of our family and close friends were with us on the day. We also had to be by the beach (a must for me!). We wanted the day to feel completely relaxed and very intimate. I have been mega obsessed with weddings since I was very little and Nathan knew this, so he made sure that I could have everything that was important to me for our special day.

Biggest Wedding-Planning Challenge

We originally spent a year planning our wedding in Byron Bay and had to do a quick 3 week turnaround when we couldn’t get through the borders. We didn’t want to postpone being married so we decided to do what we could to create a new wedding with the resources and time we had. We were so fortunate to have incredible and supportive suppliers who were flexible and generous throughout the (short) process and made our day happen! Our second planned wedding was even better and more aligned with what we wanted anyway, so we are so thankful! I highly recommend reassessing a second time around after the decisions have been made and the pressure is off, I made a lot better choices this time!

The Location

Noosa was always a special place to me, with lots of memories of childhood family holidays. The boardwalk and beach along Noosa Heads Main Beach has always been the epitome of coastal luxury to me. I couldn’t have imagined being anywhere else on my wedding day now. Even Byron Bay can’t offer a backdrop as beautiful as that.

Noosa Waterfront Restaurant was incredible at making sure we had everything we wanted, genuine staff with amazing service and everyone went out of their way to create a special event for us.

Wedding Secrets

Biggest splurge: Photographer, Beck is THE BEST. Accommodation, it was such a good decision to splash out on a beautiful place to get ready with views and space as well as it was a nice place to come back to and wake up the next day at with our post wedding glow.

Best money-saving decision: Using as much from the restaurant for styling as possible to save money so you can spend on a couple of extras like charger plates and pillar candles to style venue. Don’t feel bad to splash out on the few things you know will elevate the day and make you happy when you look back on it.

Natalie is the kind of beautiful bride that makes you want to cry! Her wedding to the love of her life and father of their four children did not escape the impact of Covid, like so many these past two years. However, the couple soldiered on, streaming their wedding to those who couldn’t make it. 

They were married at The Rocks Yandina, where they held their ceremony, and had their bridal party photo shoot and reception. The bride was an absolute vision in her couture gown by Sunshine Coast-based bridal designer, Judy Copley.

The Venue

We chose The Rocks as we heard rave reviews about the staff, the food and the venue itself. They were not wrong! The Rocks lived up to their reputation and I am so thankful for their patience, organisation, professionalism, flexibility and communication. They were absolutely fantastic.

My Couture Dress

Judy Copley was incredible to work with. Having had my fourth baby, every fitting was a challenge. Judy was an absolute magician and create my dream gown. Such a kind and beautiful nature which shines through in her dreamy gowns.

Biggest Wedding Day Priority

The kids being involved. We also really needed help with planning as we were so time poor! The Rocks were wonderful and made it all so easy.

A Special Memorial

My beautiful friend and bridesmaid, Brooke, passed away just a couple of months before the wedding and I wanted to incorporate something to remember her.

I had her photo printed and placed in my bouquet. Her photo and bridesmaid bouquet was also placed in my daughters wooden cart – she would have fought tooth and nail with the other two girls to hold bub walking down the aisle so it only seemed fitting.

Most Emotional Moment

One of my bridesmaids tragically passed away a few months before the wedding. Brooke loved love and would have done anything to be there on the day. My two beautiful bridesmaids bought me a Pandora ring with three bands on … one encrusted with diamonds. Each band represented my bridesmaids and Brooke was the sparkle.

Biggest Challenge

Covid had us postpone our original date due to lockdown but we were able to rebook a fortnight later. Unfortunately my brother and his wife were stuck in Melbourne as were about half our guestlist in NSW as well as NZ.

We ended up live streaming the ceremony via facebook. TheRocks were great and allowed us to use the projector and live stream the bestman speech from Newcastle!

The Proposal

Jason proposed in Kingscliff, NSW in 2017. We had just found out we were expecting baby number two (took another two babies to get to the wedding!) We had been out for dinner and had parked the car at a look out point to watch a storm roll in from the beach.

We made our wedding as sustainable as possible. So rather than throw aways we designed beautiful animated illustrations and emailed our guests the wedding itinerary and table number before the event.

Was it a hard decision?

Initially it did feel hard and a bit stressful! However once the decision was made (we moved our big celebration at Aquila Retreat till next October) I focused on creating a really magical day this year and was really relaxing and all about us. Funnily enough we now feel like we have the best of both worlds!

Tell us about what you did on the day.

The boys went out for breakfast while the girls got started on hair and makeup at our unit. I had my favourite music on, and did up some platters for us, and the whole morning was super chilled – we actually were running ahead of time!

We had our first look photos there, then headed to the ceremony together. It was the most stunning day with blue sky and wispy clouds, and when we were standing at the altar I couldn’t get over how stunning our spot was.

We did some sneaky photos together in a little forest path after the ceremony then met our guests at Ross’s parents’ place for the reception. Then it was drinks and canapés, and I took my shoes off straight away!

We had the most incredible 7-course degustation from 6:00, then carried on with drinks in the lounge setting by the pool. It felt so ‘us’ and we both couldn’t get over how perfect the entire day was!

Share a special moment from the day.

We loved getting first look photos at our unit overlooking the ocean! It was so nice to take time out together before the ceremony and get lost in the moment.

Seeing each other beforehand made it feel like the day was just for us and helped settle the nerves – we also loved getting chauffeured to the ceremony together in a gorgeous black Jag convertible.

When asked if they faced any challenges during the wedding planning process, bride Nicole insists there wasn’t. She credits her wedding planner with making planning her wedding in Maleny such a success by taking care of everything, and recommending amazing suppliers. 

Nicole shares her stunning wedding and story of the day she married her best friend, Matthew, with us today. The lovers were married in the chapel on site with the breathtaking Glass House Mountains as a backdrop.

The Location

We choice to get married on the sunshine coast because we fell in love with how beautiful weddings at Tiffany’s is and couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. We really wanted to get married in a venue that caterers for absolutely everything.

The Proposal

Matthew took me away for a weekend to the snow in Jindabyne NSW with all our friends. Matthew took me up to the highest point of the slopes and asked me to get off the chair lift and meet him at the side. When I got there he was down on one knee.

After a chill morning together with cute gifts in pyjamas that made me wonder, “Why aren’t all wedding day mornings like Christmas with gifts in your PJs?“, they stayed put at their Airbnb for their elopement ceremony.

Since their Airbnb, The Nest and Aviary, backs onto a picturesque Golf Course, the couple were totally relaxed and happy with the change of plans. Nothing a couple of cute clear umbrellas can’t fix!

They may not have ended up with the adventurous mountaintop Sunshine Coast elopement they originally planned, but like all good adventures – you just have to roll with it. Scroll to see how their day turned out in the end.

We recently shared Shaylea and Zak’s engagement shoot with their photographer, Mallory Sparkles, and today we have their stunning wedding for you. Here’s the story of their wedding day in bride Shaylea’s own words.

Our Wedding Venue

Maleny had always been a dream wedding location for both of us, it is just so beautiful! When we visited initially looking for wedding venues, we walked into Spicers Tamarind Retreat and just knew straight away that it was perfect! It had everything we had wanted and the day ran so smoothly, they were wonderful.

Wedding Day Priority #1

Our main priority was our photographer! We had no other real ‘priorities’ other than each other and to have amazing photos for memories of our day.

Wedding Planning Challenges

Our main challenge was our seating plan, making sure everyone would be happy. Wedding planning for us was so much fun, and not really challenging at all. We we very laid back and whatever happened, happened! We were just focusing on ourselves and enjoying the process.

Would we change anything? 

No I don’t think we would. Everything was perfect and anything else that happened is now a funny story!

Advice for Future Brides

Just focus on yourself and your partner, nothing else on the day matters as much as marrying the love of your life.
